The history of camera production in Japan dates back to the late 19th century when several Japanese companies began manufacturing cameras and other photographic equipment. One of the first Japanese camera manufacturers was Konishi Rokuichi, who founded a company called Konishi Honten in 1878. Konishi Honten initially imported and sold cameras from foreign manufacturers, but later began producing its own cameras, which included the popular Rubyflex and Pearl cameras. In the 1940s, the company’s name was changed to Konica.
In the early 20th century, several other Japanese companies entered the camera market, including Fuji Photo Film Co. (now Fujifilm), Asahi Optical Co. (now Pentax), and Konica. These companies initially manufactured cameras and other photographic equipment for the domestic market, but later expanded into the international market and became major players in the global camera industry.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Japanese camera manufacturers released several innovative cameras, including the Asahi Pentax SLR, the first Japanese camera with a pentaprism viewfinder, and the Canonflex, the first Japanese focal plane shutter SLR. These and other innovations helped Japan take a leading role in the global camera industry.
Today, Japan continues to be a major player in the camera industry. Several major companies including Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon and Olympus manufacture a wide range of cameras and other photographic equipment. After the rise of digital photography, the focus is on digital cameras. Of course, some of the production was also outsourced to other countries.
