The Konica EYE 2 is a 35mm half-frame viewfinder camera, introduced in 1967 as the successor to the original EYE. Its simple handling and fully automatic exposure made it an attractive choice for photo amateurs.

This model represents a further development of the first EYE, differing with a faster lens and a more modern light meter. Some units also come with an accessory shoe on the top of the body.

Lens

The EYE 2 is equipped with a permanently attached Hexanon 32mm f/1.8 lens. Focus is adjusted by turning the lens ring, with symbols in the viewfinder indicating the correct focusing zone. Automatic focusing is not present. The filter diameter of the lens is 46mm.

Exposure Settings

The EYE 2 uses program-controlled automatic exposure, managed by a more sensitive CdS light meter that requires a battery. The camera independently regulates the aperture and shutter speed combination based on prevailing light conditions.

For manual adjustments, the aperture ring can be detached from automatic mode, fixing the shutter speed at 1/30 second. Additionally, a B mode is available for long exposures, with the aperture set to f/1.8.

Flash System

The Konica EYE 2 does not have integrated flash automation. For shots with a flash unit, the control ring must be turned from the AUTO position to the desired aperture value (f/1.8 to f/16). The shutter speed is fixed at 1/30 second in this case. Flash synchronization occurs via a PC socket.

Batteries

Batteries are needed for the light meter. You can use two LR44 batteries for the Konica EYE 2 (eBay / Amazon*). This battery type can be easily found online.

Additional Features

A tripod socket is present on the bottom of the camera. Unlike the EYE 3, this model does not have a built-in self-timer.

A warning indicator in the viewfinder lights up red to warn of possible underexposure, thus preventing underexposed shots. The camera also prevents unintentional double exposures.

Eyelets for attaching a strap are fitted on the sides of the body. A thread for a wire release is available on the shutter button.

Film recommendations for the camera

The Konica EYE 2 uses 35mm film and exposes it in the 17.5 x 24 mm half-frame format, doubling the number of images per film. Film sensitivity is set manually and ranges from ASA 25 to 400. DX code recognition for films is not present, meaning the sensitivity must be set manually on the lens.

Possible films for the Konica EYE 2 include the Kodak Gold 200* and the Kodak TMax 400.
