Ricoh KR-5

The Ricoh KR-5 is a single-lens reflex camera. The manufacturer Ricoh launched this model, designed for 35mm film, in the late 1970s. Within the product range, the camera was positioned as an affordable option.

In the Japanese market, the device was sold under the model designation Ricoh XR 500. This 35mm camera was also available commercially under the name “Sears KS 500”.

This camera for the 35mm format is equipped with an interchangeable lens system, allowing different focal lengths to be used. The body is designed for the use of lenses with the Pentax K-mount. Since the model does not have autofocus, the photographer must set the focus manually.

This camera’s features include an integrated light meter. It supports films with a sensitivity between ISO 12 and ISO 3200. Light measurement is taken directly through the installed lens. Users have the option to individually set both aperture values and exposure times.

With the help of the Bulb function, long exposures can be achieved with this 35mm camera. As long as the shutter button is held down, the film will be exposed in this mode. An existing accessory shoe (Hot Shoe) allows external flash units to be connected to the camera.

The Ricoh KR-5 can be triggered either via the integrated self-timer or by means of a cable release. To avoid camera shake, the body offers a mounting option for tripods.

The body dimensions are specified in the manual as 13.9 x 9.1 x 5 cm. The camera’s own weight is 540 grams. Two S76 batteries (eBay / Amazon*) are required to power the 35mm camera.

Films for the Ricoh KR-5

The Ricoh KR-5 requires conventional 35mm films for operation. The 35mm format continues to hold its own alongside digital photography, which is why various manufacturers still produce corresponding film material.

Suitable options for the Ricoh KR-5 include the Kodak Portra 400* or the Kodak T-Max 100*. Companies like Adox, Foma, or Rollei also offer compatible films for this format in their product range.

Color films are usually developed using the C-41 process. Almost every photo lab offers this type of film development. In Germany, it is also possible to have films developed through the drop-off points of numerous drugstore chains.

The recording format of the Ricoh KR-5 is 24 mm x 36 mm. A standard 135-36 film typically offers space for at least 36 exposures. Since no mechanical motor for film transport is integrated, the lever must be operated manually after each shot.
