The Ricoh Auto Half SE is a half-format camera that was introduced in the 1960s. It is part of the Ricoh Auto Half series. The changes to the original model in the SE from 1967 are a self-timer and a simplification of the aperture setting.
The camera is equipped with a fixed lens, which has a focal length of 25 mm and can be opened to a maximum of f/2.8. The focus is fixed and a distance of 250 cm from the subject is required to achieve optimum results.
The 35mm camera has an integrated light meter that can be used with films from ISO 12 to ISO 200. The Ricoh Auto Half’s automatic exposure function sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically, but also allows the aperture to be selected manually according to individual requirements.
The automatic exposure mode uses a shutter speed of 1/125 second, while a shutter speed of 1/30 second is used when using a flash.
The camera weighs 350 grams and measures 8,9 x 6,7 x 3,45 cm. It requires no power to take pictures, and the light meter also works without an external power source thanks to a chemical reaction in the selenium light meter, although this can become less reliable over the years.
Films for the Ricoh Auto Half SE
The Ricoh Auto Half can still be used today if you can find one that works. It is particularly suitable for travelling. Suitable films for this camera are 35mm 35mm films. The 35mm format has undergone many changes over the years, but remains one of the most widely used film formats.
Colour photos can be taken with this camera in combination with the Kodak Ultramax 400*. The Kodak T-Max 100* is a solid choice for black and white shots. Test reports confirm that both films deliver solid results and are suitable for various applications.
The camera exposes an area of 24 mm x 17 mm, so that twice the number of images indicated on the packaging will fit on a normal 35 mm film. However, the disadvantage of the smaller exposure format is a lower quality compared to the “full format”.
