The Vivitar 35ES is a compact camera with rangefinder. It was introduced in the 1970s. Distributed by Vivitar Corp. in the USA, the 35mm camera is virtually identical to the Revue 400 SE. Both cameras have the same range of functions.
The camera is equipped with a “Vivitar Automatic 40mm 1:1.7” lens, an exposure meter with timer and a rangefinder for focusing.
The Vivitar 35ES requires 35mm film (eBay / Amazon*). The light meter actually requires a PX 675 1.35V mercury battery, but this can be replaced with a 1.4V battery for hearing aids.
Another version of the Revue 400 SE and this camera is the Prinz 35ER. This 35mm camera with “Prinz Colour Corrected 1:1.7 40 mm” lens is not completely black, however, but partially covered in chrome.

FAQ about the Vivitar 35ES
Is the Vivitar 35ES easy to use for beginners?
While it's a rangefinder camera, the Vivitar 35ES is relatively straightforward. It has automatic exposure, simplifying the shooting process. However, mastering focus with the rangefinder might take some practice.
What kind of film does this compact camera take?
The Vivitar 35ES uses standard 35mm film, which is widely available. You can find various types of film, including color negative, black and white, and slide film, to experiment with.
What's the lens like on the Revue 400 SE (and similar models)?
It features a 40mm f/1.7 lens, which is a relatively fast lens, good for low-light conditions. The fast aperture allows for a shallow depth of field, creating nicely blurred backgrounds.
How does the light meter work in this camera?
The Vivitar 35ES has an aperture-priority light meter. You choose the aperture, and the camera selects the appropriate shutter speed. It uses a battery; however, you can replace the original battery with a readily-available hearing aid battery.
What is the Prinz 35ER and how is it related?
The Prinz 35ER is a very similar model to the Vivitar 35ES and Revue 400 SE. It shares the same functionality, but differs slightly in its appearance; it has some chrome detailing instead of being entirely black.
