The Olympus Trip AF S-2 is a compact camera from the 1990s. It is part of the Olympus Trip Point and Shoot series. It was assembled in China. Some parts of the camera were produced in Japan. The camera housing is made of plastic. It is very easy to use and was intended for beginners and occasional users.
It is a classic compact camera with a built-in lens. The lens made of glass elements has a focal length of 34 mm. The focus is automatically adjusted by the technology. The compact camera does not have a zoom function. A sliding door protects the lens.
The exposure is set by the camera's automatic system. As a photographer, you cannot change the aperture and shutter speed. The film speed is read out via DX coding. Of course, there must be a corresponding coding on the film cartridge for this.
Of course, a built-in flash should not be missing. Fill flash mode is a feature of the flash. This mode can be activated if desired and ensures that the flash fires with every picture.
A camera strap can be attached to the camera. There is no thread for a tripod. There is also no self-timer function or a connection for a cable release.
According to the instructions, the power is supplied by two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*). These batteries are used for the flash, but also for the film transport.
Films for the Olympus Trip AF S-2
Of course you can still use the compact camera today. You can get used copies for 40,80 €. Films are also needed.
The Olympus Trip AF S-2 exposes 35mm films. Luckily, you can still choose from a wide selection here. A roll of film usually holds 36 images. The number of images already taken is displayed by a counter on the top of the camera. You can see whether a film is inserted through a small window on the back.
A nice film for color images is the Fujifilm Superia 400* and for black and white images the Kodak T-Max 100*. It is written that, according to test reports, both films are suitable for a wide range of uses and deliver good results.
The film transport is automated. After each shot, the motor continues to wind the film. When the end of the film roll is reached, the camera automatically winds the film back into the cartridge. This function can also be done in the middle of the roll. There is a special switch on the camera for this.
Quartz Date Model
In addition to the normal model, there was the Olympus Trip AF S-2 QD. This model comes with an integrated clock. This means she always knows the current time and date and can embed these into the images if desired. This way you can see when the picture was taken. The disadvantage, of course, is the prominent placement of the date in the images. You can recognize the model by the display and the various buttons on the back.
