Olympus Trip MD

  • Manufacturer Olympus
  • Type Snapshot camera
  • Type of Film 35mm
  • Focal Length 35 mm
  • Max Aperture f/4
  • Focus Fixed focus

The Olympus Trip MD is a powerful camera for snapshots with various automatic functions. It was produced in Taiwan. Probably mainly towards the end of the 1980s. Later there was the Olympus Trip MD2. It should be noted that it does not have many similarities with the Olympus Trip 35 model.

The integrated lens of the camera is fixed and cannot be changed. It offers a maximum aperture of f/4 and a focal length of 35 mm. It is not possible to adjust the focus settings and there is no provision for manual focusing on the target. To ensure optimal image quality, it is recommended to keep a minimum distance of 100 cm from the target.

The film speed is set on the front panel. ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400 and ISO 1000 can be selected. A constant shutter speed of 1/125 second is fixed. The aperture cannot be set manually.

The built-in flash can be switched on if desired.

Weighing 230 grams and measuring 12.1 x 6.6 x 4.5 cm, the camera requires two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*), which provide the power for all functions. A connection for a tripod can be found on the bottom. There is also a connection for a cable release.

Film options for the Olympus Trip MD

The Olympus Trip Motor Drive is specially designed for 35mm format and exposes the films intended for it optimally. The film advance is motorised and after each exposure the film is automatically advanced. A small window on the back allows the current film status to be viewed, while a frame counter is present on the top.

The 35mm format continues to enjoy great popularity and there are numerous sources and producers offering corresponding products.

Films available for the Olympus Trip MD, which are readily available online, include the Kodak T-Max 400* for stunning black and white shots and the Kodak Gold 200* for vivid colour shots.
