The Olympus Trip AF 51, a snapshot camera from Olympus, offers user-friendliness in 35mm format. Similar models, such as the Olympus Trip 505 and Olympus Trip 601, were also marketed, all manufactured in a Chinese factory.
With a fixed lens of 28 mm and a maximum aperture of f/6.7, the lens consists of three glass elements. This feature makes the camera ideal for snapshots, landscapes and group shots, but without the possibility of changing lenses.
The focus is set automatically, without manual adjustment of the distance, requiring a minimum distance of 100 cm for sharp images. Macro shots are less suitable with this model.
The light meter ensures correct settings in the ISO range from 100 to 400, automatically taken from the film coding on the cartridge.
The automatic exposure mode does not allow manual selection of shutter speed and aperture, with a shutter speed of 1/140 second to 1/2 second.
The built-in flash reaches up to 1.9 metres at ISO 100 and indicates its readiness with a light. A tripod thread and self-timer facilitate group shots.
The Olympus Trip AF 51 uses two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*) and allows the use of rechargeable batteries. A camera strap can be attached to the side and the housing is made of plastic.
Films for the Olympus Trip AF 51
The Olympus Trip AF 51 relies on 35mm film, and despite digitalisation, there is a nostalgic love for analogue film. For colour shots, Kodak Gold 200* is recommended, while Ilford Delta 400* is suitable for black and white shots.
The C-41 development process is suitable for processing colour films. The camera has an exposure area of 24 mm x 36 mm, automatic film transport and a window on the back to display the inserted film. The rear panel may only be opened after the film has been rewound.
Olympus Trip AF 51 QD
In addition to the normal model, there was also an Olympus Trip AF 51 Quartz Date. This variant can imprint the current date on the image. This makes it easy to determine later when the photo was taken.
