The Canon EOS Rebel XS is a single lens reflex camera. The 35mm camera was built by Canon and presented to the public in the early 90s. It is the predecessor of the Canon EOS Rebel G. The Canon EOS Rebel XS was also sold under the name “Canon EOS 500”. In Japan you could buy it as EOS Kiss. There it was a great success, as in the rest of the world. Especially the low weight and the handiness were praised.
The lenses of the Canon EOS Rebel XS are interchangeable. It comes with an EF bayonet. In most cases you will find the Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM on the camera. To focus the lens, the Canon EOS Rebel XS has an autofocus system built in.
The Canon EOS Rebel XS has a built-in light meter. It is designed for films from ISO 6 to ISO 6400. The camera reads the DX code of the film cartridge and sets the light meter accordingly. The exposure is measured through the lens. The Canon EOS Rebel XS has several automatic exposure controls and a manual mode.
The camera comes with a bulb mode. In low light conditions the built-in flash can be used. For ISO 100 films it reaches up to 12 meters. An external flash can be used with the 35 mm camera via hot shoe. In the Canon EOS Rebel XS a thread for a tripod is built in. There is also a self-timer.
According to the manual the camera weighs 370 grams. The dimensions are 14,5 x 9,2 x 6,2 cm gram. A 6V 2CR5 battery (eBay / Amazon*) provides the power supply.
Films for the Canon EOS Rebel XS
The Canon EOS Rebel XS requires 35mm film. These films are still in production and can be quoted at almost every supplier of development work. One possibility for b/w pictures is AgfaPhoto APX 400*, a possible film for color pictures is Agfaphoto Vista 400*.
The development of color film is done in the C-41 process. The C-41 films are offered by most photo laboratories.
The film in the camera is transported automatically. During loading, the complete film is wound from the cartridge onto a spool. After each exposure, a piece is fed back into the cartridge. This ensures that no images are lost due to the incidence of light when the back cover is opened unintentionally.
