Praktica L

The Praktica L is a single lens reflex camera. It was built from 1969 to 1975 by the VEB Pentacon in the GDR. At Ringfoto in Germany this model was sold as “Praktica Autoreflex S”. Hanimex brought the camera to the USA as “Hanimex Praktica L”. The camera were also available as “Cavalier SLR-III”. The photo dealer Porst offered it as “Porst reflex CX3” in West Germany.

The Praktica L lens is interchangeable. For this purpose, an M42 thread was used. The M42 thread is more standardised and manufacturer-independent, which is why there are a large number of lenses for this type. You have to focus the lens by hand. The 35 mm camera does not have an autofocus function.

The exposure is not measured by the camera. The aperture and exposure time can be selected by the photographer as desired.

The 35 mm camera has a bulb mode. The shutter can remain open for a variable time. The built-in hot shoe can be used to trigger an external flash unit.

Films for the Praktica L

The Praktica L is designed for the 35mm format. 35mm films are still produced today. They can be developed in most photo laboratories. A good choice for color photography is the Kodak Portra 400*. If you want to stay monochrome, the Ilford Delta 100* is not bad.

The Praktica L features is a thread for a mounting a normal tripod. There is also a connector for a cable release.

The Praktica L can today only be found used. The value of a used model is primarily determined by the condition and functionality.
