Zenit

Zenit is a camera brand whose history dates back to 1952, when it was founded by a group of Soviet optical engineers in the Soviet Union (now Russia). Over the years, the company has become known for its cameras, which have been used by photographers all over the world, but of course mainly in the Soviet Union.

One of the most important features of Zenit cameras is certainly not their exceptional image quality or scope of sophisticated functions. In the West, they were more likely to impress with their low price. Thus, some models were also sold under other names in the Western world.

The first Zenit camera was still based on the design of the rangefinder camera Zorki. This model also still used the M39 thread. Later, there were other lens mounts and they were more oriented towards classic SLR cameras.

One of the most important milestones in Zenit’s history was the introduction of the Zenit-E camera in 1964, which was a 35mm SLR camera. Another important milestone in Zenit’s history was the introduction of the Zenit-3M camera in 1970.

Lenses for Zenit cameras

Most Zenit cameras are designed for lenses with M42 threads. However, there are also some models for other lens mounts. Especially with the M42 models, you can choose from a wide range of lenses and do not have to resort to the supplied lenses. Especially the optics are crucial for the image quality of the photos.

The brand name Zenit translates into Russian as Зени́т. Sometimes you can also find models with the spelling “Zenith”. Later, models from Chinese production were also sold under the brand name. These include, for example, the Zenit DF-300.
