The Zenit-S / Zenit-C is an SLR camera. It was manufactured by KMZ in the USSR from 1955 to 1961. The S / Z stands for Synchronized, referring to the possibility of connecting a flash. The design of the camera is based on the Zorki.

The lenses of the Zenit-S can be changed. Lenses for the M39 thread can be used. In most cases it was sold with the Industar-50 3.5/50. The Zenit-S has no autofocus. The lens is focused manually.

The Zenit-S does not have a meter for proper exposure. The Zenit-S has a Bulb mode. In this mode, the film is exposed as long as the shutter button is pressed. The use of a flash is possible via the PC flash socket.

The camera does not need power to take pictures. To the next picture must be manually rewound by the photographer.

Films for the Zenit-S

The Zenit-S uses 35mm film. 35mm film is still readily available today and is developed by most photo labs. One possible film for color images is the Fujifilm Superia 400*. A possibility for B&W images is the Kodak T-Max 400*. Both films produce solid results. Of course, there are many other options for the Zenit SLR.

The development of the color film is the C-41 process. The C-41 film is offered by most photo labs. In addition to development, most service providers also offer to make prints or digitize the negatives.

The black and white film must be processed in a suitable black and white developer. This type of development is also offered by most professional photo labs, but is usually somewhat expensive. In the long run, it is cheaper to develop the films yourself. The chemicals and lab supplies needed for this can be purchased online. In addition to saving money, you have full control over the development process and can achieve the best possible results with the Zenit-S.
