The Zenit 12 is an SLR camera and an improved version of the Zenit TTL. The model series was manufactured by KMZ in Russia from 1983 to 1994.
The lenses of the Zenit 12 are interchangeable. It comes with the M42 thread for interchangeable lenses. In most cases it was sold with the Helios-44-M-4.
The M42 thread is a standardized, non-proprietary lens mount for interchangeable lenses. The M42 thread was developed by Carl Zeiss in Jena, Germany. Zeiss, KMZ, Pentacon and Pentax, among others, were major manufacturers of M42 lenses. There is no autofocus function on the Zenit 12. The focus is set manually.
The Zenit 12 has a built-in light meter. The SLR determines the exposure when metering through the lens (TTL). The exposure time and aperture can be freely selected. There is a bulb mode for long exposures. Here, the shutter remains open as desired. With the PC flash port and the hot shoe, the use of a flash light is possible.
Films for the Zenit 12
Nothing works with the Zenit 12 without 35mm film. 35mm films are still made and are developed without problems at most photo labs. Possible films for the Zenit 12 are the Kodak Gold 200* for color photos and the Kodak T-Max 400* for B&W images.
The black and white film must be processed in the appropriate photographic chemistry. The color film is processed in the C-41 process. This development process is available at almost every photo lab. The Zenit 12 negatives are 24 mm x 36 mm. Thus, approximately 36 images fit on one roll of film.
A thread for a tripod is built into the Zenit 12. In addition, there is a connection for a cable release and a self-timer.
Zenit 12SD
The Zenit 12SD is very similar to the 12, but comes with a revised exposure time dial. Later versions have a revised top and a housing for a pentaprism.
Zenit 12XP
The Zenit 12XP is very similar to the 12SD, but has an LED indicator in the viewfinder. In Brazil, a version of the 12XP was produced by BMA INDÚSTRIA E COMÉRCIO LTDA.
