The Marix B&W 400 is a black and white film. It is the Marix brand under which the film material can be found commercially. The brand belongs to the Cloudoc company from Osaka, Japan. The production of the footage is carried out by Foma in the Czech Republic. Foma offers it as Fomapan 400.

The Marix Black and White 400 is a black and white film that is characterized by its versatility and robustness. It is ideal for shooting in difficult lighting conditions or when short exposure times are required. Its high light sensitivity of ISO 400 makes it possible to achieve sharp and detailed images even in low light.

A special feature of the Marix B&W 400 is its enormous exposure tolerance. Even with over or under exposure by up to two f-stops, it still delivers good results without having to adjust the development times. This makes it an ideal film for situations where lighting conditions are difficult to assess or change quickly.

The fine grain of the film ensures high resolution and razor-sharp images. It retains good drawing and attention to detail even in the shadow areas. The Marix 400 is therefore suitable for a wide range of subjects, from portraits and street photography to landscapes and architectural photography.

Developing the film is uncomplicated and can be done in all common developers. The accompanying data table provides recommendations for development times at various developers and temperatures. Special black and white papers such as Fomabrom and Fomaspeed as well as all other papers of this type are suitable for enlargement.

Formats

35mm film is the most common format for this film, it holds 36 images per roll. However, it was also available in medium format. The film cartridge does not have DX coding, which can lead to limitations with some modern cameras. Suitable 35mm cameras were manufactured by Zenit, Leica and Olympus, among others. Various cameras from manufacturers such as Agfa, Holga or Yashica are suitable for medium format.

In addition to the 36-pack version, the film is also available in a pack of 24 and sold by the meter on spools, which is particularly interesting for photographers who want to assemble their films themselves. The 36 variant will cost 1650 yen in 2024. The medium format film costs 1200 yen.
