The Ilford FP4 Plus is a black and white film. It is manufactured by Harman Technology Limited in Great Britain.
The Ilford FP4 Plus’s low film speed, making it ideal for shooting in intense lighting, also makes it a top choice for photographers seeking unparalleled image quality. The fine grain achieved by the low sensitivity allows a high level of detail to be displayed, which is particularly useful when wanting to capture exquisite textures and nuances that are often lost in high sensitivity images.
In scenarios such as sunny beach landscapes or light-filled city parks, photographers can use this film to capture the nuances of brightly lit environments in great detail, with an open aperture contributing to a pleasing bokeh effect that further enhances the aesthetics of the image. It’s also worth noting that while the film particularly shines in high light conditions, it can also deliver excellent results in studio settings where a controlled light source is present.
Formats
You can buy the Ilford FP4 Plus for 35mm, medium format and large format cameras. It is available as sheet film, 35mm film (Amazon) and medium format film (Amazon).
Coated on a 0.125mm/5mil acetate base, FP4 Plus 35mm film is available in 24 or 36 exposure cassettes and in bulk lengths of 17 or 30.5 meters. The film is supplied in cassettes with DX coding and is therefore suitable for all 35 mm cameras; some cameras can derive the sensitivity from this and set it directly.
For those who prefer roll film, there is roll film for medium format cameras, which is coated on a 0.110 mm/4 millimeter thick clear acetate base that dissolves during development.
The FP4 Plus sheet film for large format cameras is coated on a 0.180mm/7mil polyester base and has an antihalation backing that also peels off during processing. The sheet film is available in standard formats and also in more exotic formats upon request.
Besides him there is the Pan F Plus and the HP5 Plus.
Development
The Ilford FP4 Plus is developed in a corresponding black and white developer and not in the C-41 process (color negative films). This can be carried out at a specialist laboratory or you can of course develop it yourself; Of course, as a developer you don’t have to use an Ilford product. Ilford recommends the ILFOTEC DD-X or ID-11 (stock) as a black and white developer.
