The Canon EOS 7 is a single lens reflex camera. The 35mm camera is a product of Canon and was introduced in 2000 as successor of the Canon EOS 55. The Canon EOS 7 was also sold on the market under the name “Canon EOS 33”. US-American customers could buy it under the name “EOS Elan 7E”.
The camera from the 1990s was aimed at prosumers. The camera comes with an eye-controlled autofocus system. The focusing function of the eye control makes selective focusing faster for many. It uses IR to detect eye movements and determine focus areas. Up to five presets can be stored for different users.
The Canon EOS 7 comes with interchangeable lenses. An EF bayonet was installed for this purpose. The Canon EOS 7 has a built-in autofocus system. There are seven autofocus points in total.
The Canon EOS 7 has a built-in light meter. The light meter was designed for films with a sensitivity of ISO 6 to ISO 6400. The camera reads the ISO value via the DX code on the cartridge. Only values between ISO 25 and ISO 5000 are supported.
With the 35mm SLR, the exposure is measured through the lens (TTL). The exposure is set automatically by the camera. There are different exposure modes for this. The exposure time and aperture can be freely selected in manual mode.
The fastest exposure time is 1/4000 second. The camera also comes with a bulb mode. The shutter can remain open for a variable time.
The Canon EOS 7 comes with a built-in flash. This has a range of up to thirteen metres at ISO 100. An external flash can be connected via the hot shoe.
The self-timer has a lead time of about 10 seconds according to the manual. A tripod thread is also built in. The date of the shot can also be directly exposed on request.
The dimensions of the 35mm camera are 14.6 x 10.3 x 6.9 cm. It weighs 575 grams. The power supply is provided by two CR123A batteries (eBay / Amazon*), which can be easily purchased today.
Films for the Canon EOS 7
Which films are required for the Canon EOS 7? You have to buy 35mm films for the camera. 35mm films are still offered by various manufacturers. A good choice for color and black and white pictures is for example the Kodak Gold 200* and the Ilford HP5*.
The development of color film is done in the C-41 process. The C-41 process is carried out by almost all photo laboratories.
The exposure area of the Canon EOS 7 has a size of 24 mm x 36 mm. With this size 36 pictures fit on a normal 35mm film. The film is transported with a built-in motor. This motor takes up to four pictures per second. Rewind is done automatically at the end of the film.
