The Canon EOS 55 is a camera from Canon. It is a single lens reflex camera from 1995 and is the predecessor of the Canon EOS 7. The 35mm photo camera was also available on the market under the names “Canon EOS 50E” (Europe) and “EOS Elan IIE” (America). The new price for a housing without lens was 88,000 Yen in Japan, Canon’s home country, at that time.

The lenses of the Canon EOS 55 are interchangeable. It comes with an EF bayonet. Manual focusing is not necessary with the 35mm camera. The Canon EOS 55 comes with an autofocus. The autofocus point on this model can be selected by looking through the viewfinder.

The Canon EOS 55 has an exposure meter for measuring the exposure. It can be used with films from ISO 6 to ISO 6400. The camera uses the DX code to determine the correct sensitivity of the film. The SLR camera determines the correct exposure by measuring through the lens (TTL). The Canon EOS 55 can set the aperture and exposure time automatically. The shutter speed and aperture can be selected by the photographer.

The camera comes with a bulb mode. In this mode, the film is exposed as long as the shutter release button is pressed. There is a built-in flash for taking pictures when there is insufficient light. An external flash can be used with the 35 mm camera by hot shoe. The Canon EOS 55 has a thread for a tripod and a self-timer.

The power supply is provided by a 6V 2CR5 battery (eBay / Amazon*), this kind of batteries are still easy to get.

Films for the Canon EOS 55

Which films are required for the Canon EOS 55? You have to buy 35mm films for the camera. 35mm films are still produced today. They can be developed in most laboratories. For color photos you can use Kodak Gold 200*. The Ilford Delta 400* is a good choice for black and white pictures.

The film is automatically rewound by the camera. At the end of the roll the film is rewound back into the cartridge. If desired, the camera can immortalize the date of shooting through the data back on the image.
