How does the panorama function work?
Why is this panorama not real? We distinguish here between panorama cameras and cameras with fake panorama function. While a real panorama camera takes a picture with more content than a normal camera, using the fake panorama function only gives the impression of a panorama and does not capture more of the scenery than without the function switched on.
This function can be found on very many compact cameras from the 1990s and early 2000s. It was especially popular with consumer models.
The function is actually quite simple. When the function is switched on, two bars, top and bottom, move in front of the film in the camera. This covers part of the film, the later negative. If you now take a photo, this area logically remains black.
If the picture is printed as a print, it has a different aspect ratio than a "normal" picture. A normal picture usually has an aspect ratio of 2:3, with the panorama function it is e.g. 1:2. The long side gives the impression of a panorama.
The decisive difference to a panorama camera, however, is that there is no additional image information. In a landscape picture, for example, you have cut away part of the sky and the foreground, but the mountains on the right and left are still not in the picture.
If you like this aspect ratio, you can of course use this function. In the digital age, however, it is also not difficult to create the same look by simply cropping the scanned image itself accordingly. This gives you the advantage of being able to decide for yourself what looks best on a case-by-case basis.
Often you will find the panorama function on cameras with a data back for date imprinting. Both functions were often used as a selling point.
