Agfa Agfacolor XRS 400

The Agfa Agfacolor XRS 400 is a colour negative film. It is one of the members of the Agfacolor XRS series and was designed for professional users. In addition to the 400 version, there was also a 100er, 200er and 1000er.

The Agfacolor XRS 400 is designed for colour photos. According to the manufacturer, the film should be exposed at ISO 400, which makes it a good companion for the day. For example, short exposure times for sports shots or pictures of subjects in motion are possible without any problems. Photos in the shade with a smaller aperture can also be taken.

Development of the film

The film is developed in the C-41 process. The C-41 process is performed by most laboratories. In most cases, the lab makes prints of the negatives directly.

However, the negatives of the developed color negative film can also be digitized with a scanner. Corresponding devices are available for home use. The service is also offered by many photo labs together with the development.

Availability and Alternatives

The film was offered as roll film (120) and for 35 mm cameras. The 35 mm film of the XRS 400 was available in versions with 24 and 36 frames. The cartridge carries a DX code with the correct film speed.

In the meantime the colour film is no longer produced. You could replace the 35mm film with Kodak Ultramax 400*. The film material in 120 format could be replaced by the Kodak Portra 400*.

Sample photos

The sample images were taken with an expired roll of XRS 400. The roll film was exposed in the Pentax 645 medium format camera. The lens used was a Pentax 105 mm f/2.4. This lens is actually intended for the Pentax 67, but with a suitable adapter it can also be used with the Pentax 645. The Pentax 645 exposes in a format of 6 by 4.5 cm.

The expired XRS 400 was processed after exposure in the normal C-41 development process.
