The Safeway Super 200 is a color negative film. It was sold under Safeway’s house brand. The material was produced in Germany. Agfa was probably the manufacturer of the color film.
The Safeway Super 200 is great for taking color photos and was mainly aimed at amateurs and casual users at the time. With an ISO sensitivity of 200, it offers an ideal balance between sensitivity and grain size, making it optimal for a wide variety of applications – from landscape to portrait to studio photography.
The ISO 200 film features excellent color reproduction and fine grain structure, resulting in sharp and detailed images. Compared to higher ISO films, such as ISO 400 or 800, an ISO 200 film has less noise in shadow areas and backgrounds.
Developing the film
If you can still find such film, it can be developed using the C-41 chemical process. This process is possible in most German photo labs and is standardized, so the end result is always the same regardless of the lab. It is also possible to develop the film yourself at home using the appropriate chemistry and equipment. After development, you get film strips with the photos you took.
The next step is to digitize the negatives or have prints made. It is common practice at many developing labs to make prints of the developed images upon request.
Digitizing
In order to digitally process the analog images, the film strips should be digitized using a scanner. There are numerous devices for digitizing negatives, which differ in price and functionality. The digitized photos can then be shared on social media or further processed.
Availability and Alternatives
The Safeway Super 200 was available exclusively for 35mm cameras and accommodated 24 exposures per roll of film. The film cartridge was marked with a DX code that allowed certain camera models to automatically detect the film speed.
The 35mm cartridge is green with a yellow dot. The Safeway logo is in red lettering on a white background.
Since color film is no longer in new production, the Kodak Gold 200* is a possible alternative for 35mm cameras.
