The Safeway 200 Speed is a color negative film. It was offered by the American company Safeway. It was sold under the supermarket chain’s house brand. The film material was produced by another company.
The Safeway 200 Speed is excellent for color photography and was aimed primarily at amateur photographers and occasional users. An ISO sensitivity of 200 provides an ideal blend of sensitivity and grain size, making it ideal for a variety of uses – from landscape to portrait to studio photography.
An ISO 200 film features exceptional color reproduction and fine grain structure, resulting in sharp and detailed images. Unlike higher ISO sensitivity films such as ISO 400 or 800, ISO 200 film has less image noise in shadow areas and backgrounds.
Film Development
The C-41 chemistry process provides consistent results in film development and is used as standard by most photo labs in Germany. If you still have such film, you can develop it either in a lab or yourself at home. After development, you can have the negatives digitized or prints made. Some labs also offer the option to get prints of the developed images.
If you choose to develop the film at home, you will need the proper chemistry and equipment. However, it is important to work carefully and accurately to get the best quality results.
The option of getting prints directly from a developing lab can be a convenient and time-saving solution. However, it is advisable to clarify in advance the cost and the desired level of image processing.
Digitizing
To digitally edit analog photos, it is necessary to digitize the film strips with a scanner. There are a variety of devices that vary in price and performance that can be used to digitize negatives. The resulting digital images can be conveniently shared on social media or further processed.
Availability and Alternatives
The Safeway 200 Speed was only available for 35mm cameras and allowed 24 exposures per roll of film. The film cartridge had a DX code that allowed certain camera models to automatically detect the film speed.
The cartridge of the film is blue with a red border. The label with the text “200 speed 35mm color print film 24 exposures Process C-41” is white.
Since the color film is no longer being made new, the Kodak Gold 200* offers a suitable alternative for 35mm cameras.
