The Polaroid 600 InstantArt Grid, a limited edition of the popular instant camera, was introduced by Retrospekt in June 2024 and is available for around 170 euros. In addition to this eye-catching model with a colorful design, two other variants were presented that also make the hearts of instant fans beat faster.

The cameras are not completely rebuilt, but are partly based on old Polaroid technology.

Instant camera design

The camera is in a strong blue, accentuated by contrasting elements in black and bright yellow. This color combination gives the camera a retro look reminiscent of the era of early video games.

A pixel-like pattern in various shades of blue adorns most of the camera body. The pattern is geometric and reminiscent of the graphics of old 8-bit computer games. On the front of the camera there is another eye-catching pattern in black and yellow, reminiscent of a grid, that frames the lens.

The camera comes with a sheet of stickers that reflect the design of the camera. The stickers contain various pixel patterns and symbols that are reminiscent of the 80s.

The camera’s packaging also has the same design. It is blue, black and yellow and shows the pixel pattern as well as the words “Polaroid” and “InstantArt”.

Camera functions

The Polaroid 600 InstantArt Grid is deliberately kept simple to ensure intuitive operation.

The camera is equipped with a fixed lens and has neither a zoom nor an adjustable focal length. There is also no option to adjust the focus. The exposure settings are taken care of by the built-in light meter, although minor adjustments can be made using the light/dark slider on the front.

These limited setting options contribute to uncomplicated handling, so that even inexperienced users can easily take photos with the camera after a short introduction.

The automatically triggered built-in flash ensures sufficient light for the shots. The camera and flash are powered by a battery in the film cassette, which is replaced every time the film is changed. A separate battery is not required for the photography process.

Films for the Polaroid 600 InstantArt Grid

The instant camera is supplied without films and requires the separate purchase of the corresponding film cassette.

The suitable films for the Polaroid 600 InstantArt Grid are still available, with a choice between black and white and color films. The color film is called Polaroid Color Film for 600*, while the Polaroid B&W Film for 600* is required for monochrome shots.

A total of eight images are contained in a film cassette. Once the images have been used up, a new film must be inserted, although no film material is supplied. The development time varies depending on the film type and is between 5 and 15 minutes.

Camera Instructions

Check batteries: The camera works with a special battery built into the film cassettes. When you insert a new film cassette, the camera automatically has new batteries.

Insert film: Open the door on the front of the camera and insert the film cassette. Make sure the cassette is the right way up – the dark side should be facing up. Close the door.

Turn on the camera: Most Polaroid 600 cameras turn on automatically when you open the door.

Find subject: Look through the camera’s viewfinder and find your subject. Make sure there is enough light. In low light conditions, the flash will work automatically.

Take a photo: When you’re ready, press the shutter button. The camera will make a sound and the image will be ejected.

Develop the image: Wait patiently while the image develops. This may take a few minutes. Avoid shaking the image or exposing it to direct sunlight.

Turn off the camera: When you’re finished, turn off the camera by closing the door.

Additional tips

Hold the camera steady while you take pictures to avoid blurry images.

Experiment with the distance from your subject and exposure to get the best results.

Store your camera in a cool, dry place when you’re not using it.

If your camera has a flash, you can also use it in good lighting conditions to lighten shadows.
