The Lomo’Instant Automat is an immediate camera. It was introduced by Lomography in August 2016 and is the third instant camera from the Austrian company. It was financed via Kickstarter. Later, it was also sold regularly.
Features of the instant camera
The Lomo’Instant Automat comes with a 60 mm lens. This focal length is roughly equivalent to a 35 mm lens on a 35 mm camera. Additionally, there are attachments for the lens.
There is a close-up lens for shooting at a distance of 10 cm from the subject. Also, the instant camera comes with a wide angle attachment (90 degrees) and a fisheye lens (170 degrees).
A filter can be screwed onto the 43 mm thread if desired. The instant camera has a zone focus with three levels.
The Lomo’Instant Automat has two exposure modes. There is an auto mode and a bulb mode. In the latter, the shutter stays open as long as the shutter is pressed. Bulb mode is limited to 30 seconds. Multiple exposures are possible with the Lomo’Instant Automat. A special splitter is also included for this purpose.
The instant camera comes with a built-in flash. This can be operated in an auto mode or can also be turned off. Additionally, it can be colored with included color filters.
In the lens cap, as with the Lomo’Instant Wide, there is a remote shutter release. With it, group shots and selfies are easily possible.
The Lomo’Instant Automat has a thread for a tripod.
Two CR2 battery (eBay / Amazon*) are needed to power the instant camera. The remote shutter release is powered by one CR1632 battery.
The Lomo’Instant Automat comes in a variety of versions, as is typical for Lomography cameras. For example, there is the Automat in a version with glass lenses.
In the delivery of the Lomo’Instant Automat, depending on the version, are, in addition to the camera, a wide-angle attachment, a close-up lens, a fisheye lens, a lens cap with remote release, a splitter for double exposures, color filters for the flash, a manual with photo tips and material to hang the pictures.
Films for the Lomo’Instant Automat
The Lomo’Instant Automat requires Instax Mini Film* to take pictures. Fuji still manufactures film for this format today.
It is currently the smallest instant format on the market. The dimensions of an Instax Mini image are 8.6 x 5.4 cm. The image surrounded by a frame is 62 x 46 mm. The image size is comparable to a credit card.
A cassette contains the instant pictures. The film cassette is placed in the camera. 10 images are contained in one cassette. When the frame counter shows zero, the cassette must be replaced. Around 70 cents must be paid per image.
After the picture is taken, it is thrown out of the Lomo’Instant Automat. Within a few minutes, as if out of nowhere, the captured image appears. The color film impresses with colorful and high-contrast images. Pens and stickers can be used to decorate the white frame around the pictures.
If you want to take black and white pictures with the Lomo’Instant Automat, then you can reach for the Instax Mini Monochrome*. The color film comes in different editions with colorful frames. For weddings, scrapbooking and parties, the Instax Mini format is well suited.
