The Kodak Star 635 is a compact camera. It was produced by Kodak from 1990 to 1991. This model is a point-and-shoot camera. The name says it all: you don’t have to do more than aim at your subject and press the shutter release. This already describes the range of functions and settings. You certainly don’t need a manual for this entry-level camera.

A fixed lens is installed in the 35 mm camera. There is no autofocus. The lens is fixed and cannot be changed. The focal length is not mentioned on the camera, but will probably be in a range between 30 and 35 mm. The camera does not have a zoom function.

The 35mm camera has a built-in light meter. Exposure is set automatically by the Kodak Star 635. Aperture and shutter speed cannot be set. Film speed is set by the code on the cartridge.

In low light conditions, the built-in flash can be used. Two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon*) are responsible for the power supply. There is no need to replace the batteries, as AA batteries are still easy to get today. There is no thread for a tripod on the bottom. There is also no self-timer on this model.

Films for the Kodak Star 635

What kind of films are needed for the Kodak Star 635? The camera is designed for 35mm film. These films are still being manufactured and can be specified from almost any developing vendor. A nice film for color images is the Fujifilm Superia 400* and for black and white images the Kodak T-Max 400*. Other suitable films are also offered by Foma, Rollei and Adox, among others. However, the film should have a DX code on the cartridge.

The film is automatically transported by a motor. The current number of frames is displayed with a counter on the top. The film is also rewound automatically at the end of the roll. The back of the camera can then be opened and the cartridge removed.

The development process for color film is the C-41 process. This is offered by almost every photo lab. Developing a 35mm color film is possible, for example, at most drugstore chains in Germany. The black-and-white film must be developed in a developer such as D-76, Rodinal or the Kodak T-Max developer.
