The Kodak Portra 400 UC is a color negative film. It is part of Kodak’s Portra family of films. The “UC” in the name stands for Ultra Color. It was offered until the early 2000s.

This color negative film was designed for professional applications that include commercial, fashion, editorial, architectural, advertising, and nature photography. It offers high color brilliance and low grain, similar to color reversal films, while maintaining the classic portra film look that photographers love.

The Kodak Professional Portra 400UC is a film with an ISO rating of 400, and its high sensitivity makes it ideal for low-light situations or when shooting at a faster shutter speed.

Use of expired film

The film has not been produced for a long time. But what if you have expired film? Then you’re in luck, because taking pictures with expired film can be a fun and exciting experience. However, you have to keep in mind that the film may have aged differently depending on how it was stored.

If you want to shoot with expired film, you should adjust the ISO setting to match the “new age”. This means that you should make the film a little more sensitive to get the best exposure possible. It should be noted that this technique only applies to color negative film.

Another important consideration when shooting expired film is how long it has been expired. As a general rule, every ten years that a film has been expired, you should shoot one step lower. This will ensure that the photos look their best and you get the most out of the expired film.

Developing the Kodak Portra 400UC

Developing film stock is an essential step for anyone doing analog photography. Especially for color negative film, the C-41 process is widely used and offered by most photo labs in Germany. The process follows a standardized procedure to ensure optimal quality and consistency during development.

However, if you have the right chemistry and the necessary accessories, you can also develop the film at home. The process ends with the film strips showing the captured images.

Following this, there are two common options: making prints or digitizing. Many photo labs offer the creation of prints directly as a service, in different sizes and formats.

Digitization of negatives

The digitization of negatives is also a common service offered by photo labs. However, one can also use a home scanner to digitize one’s images.

Formats & Alternatives

The Kodak Portra 400UC was offered in 35mm and medium format film.

The 35mm film comes in a cartridge with DX encoding. So it can also be used in modern 35mm cameras. One roll of film usually holds 36 images.

Medium format film was available in 120 and 220 versions. The 120 film can be used in most medium format cameras. The 220 film, which is twice as long, can only be used in a few cameras. On a roll in the format 6×6 12 or 24 pictures fit.

As an alternative, you can use the Kodak Portra 400. This film is still in production and is available for both formats. You can buy the 35mm Kodak Portra 400* and the 120 Kodak Portra 400*.
