The Lucky GBR 400 is a color negative film. The manufacturer is listed as China Lucky Film Corporation.

For vivid and detailed color images, the GBR 400 is the ideal choice. With a rated sensitivity of ISO 400, this film allows for optimal results in a wide variety of photographic situations.

Its versatility makes it a reliable companion for photographers in all fields. Whether for fast action shots, portrait photography or landscape photography. Exposure meters detect ISO effortlessly, so photographers can rely on accurate exposure settings.

Using expired film

It is rather unlikely to find a roll of color film today that has not already expired. However, the expiration date given by the manufacturer does not mark the final end of the film’s usefulness. It is important to remember that older film can lose sensitivity due to aging or improper storage in a warm place.

If one decides to use expired color film, it is advisable to adjust the exposure settings to a lower ISO to avoid underexposure. It is also important to note that expired film can cause changes in color tones, increased noise, and a decrease in brilliance in photographs. Still, expired film can create a charming and artistic aesthetic that is appreciated by some photographers. It can be an exciting experience to work with such film and discover the unexpected results.

Developing the film

Once the film is fully exposed, it is necessary to develop the film stock to obtain the final images. The development process for the Lucky GBR 400, known as the C-41 process, is offered by most laboratories. The C-41 process is standardized so that nearly identical results can be obtained regardless of the lab.

After the negatives are developed, prints can be made using a color enlarger. An alternative option is to use a scanner to transfer the images to digital formats. Many developing laboratories also offer the option of having prints made directly in various sizes.

If further digital processing of the photos is desired, the film strips can be digitized by scanning. There are various devices available for digitizing negatives, depending on individual needs and budget. The digitized images can then be uploaded to social media platforms, for example, or printed in various formats.

Availability and alternatives

The GBR 400 was available for 35mm format. One roll of film could take 36 exposures unless otherwise specified on the package. The film cartridge of the 35mm film was equipped with a DX code that allowed certain cameras to automatically adjust the film speed.

Manufacturers such as Zorki, Rollei or Lomography offer suitable cameras for the 35mm format. However, there are other cameras that are suitable for use with 35mm film.

Unfortunately, the Lucky GBR 400 is no longer in production, so fresh film stock is no longer available. However, there is alternative film stock in the 35mm range such as the Kodak Ultramax 400*.
