Collect Utility Sling Bag Review

In this review, we’ll take a look at a bag from a relatively new brand. How does the Collect Utility Sling Bag perform in everyday photographic use?

Background on the Collect Paris Brand

Collect Paris is a design studio that defines itself not only through design and functionality but also through a strong ethical and ecological core. Their name says it all: they “collect” waste materials to create new products from them.

For example, Collect offers a series of wallets handcrafted from leather scraps that were destined for the trash. For some time now, they have also offered a series of shoulder bags. This series includes the Mini Sling Bag, Slim Sling Bag, and the Utility Sling Bag.

The sustainability aspect of these bags means that the textiles used are made from recycled plastic waste fished from bodies of water like the Yangtze River in China. This approach not only helps clean the oceans but also supports local fishermen who are restricted in their original activities by environmental regulations.

The bags are produced by the Chinese company Gao Feng Bags. Gao Feng Bags produces bags and backpacks on behalf of various brands, prioritizing sustainability and fair wages for their employees.

Material, Size & Build Quality

The first impression upon unpacking the Utility Sling Bag is positive. The bag comes in a simple yet high-quality fabric pouch that can be reused for storage or other purposes.

The Utility Sling Bag itself immediately feels premium and robust. The outer material, a fabric made from recycled ocean waste, is not only durable but also water-repellent.

With dimensions of 26 cm in length, 9.5 cm in width, and 14 cm in height, and a volume of four liters, it strikes a good balance. It’s compact enough not to be cumbersome but spacious enough for more than just a few small items. More on that later.

The build quality is impeccable. All seams are neatly finished, the metal hardware feels durable, and the overall construction is shape-retaining. This is due to the continuous, thin EVA foam padding that encloses all sides of the bag.

The rigid form is a key feature: the bag maintains its rectangular shape whether empty or full. On one hand, this is advantageous for protecting the contents; on the other hand, it means it doesn’t conform to the body as closely as softer bags. However, this is not a flaw but a matter of personal preference.

A visual detail is the royal blue interior lining, which provides a nice contrast to the black exterior. While this shade is appealing, it has the practical disadvantage of hindering visibility of the contents, especially in low light conditions. In a brighter interior, small items at the bottom of the compartments would be easier to spot, particularly in the front and back compartments.

The Collect Utility Sling Bag features AquaGuard zippers on all compartments. Their benefit for weather protection is undeniable, but it comes with a compromise: they are noticeably stiffer than standard zippers, especially noticeable at the corners of the bag. Furthermore, from experience, the rubber coating that provides the seal is a wear part and not designed for eternity. Thus, you are trading a degree of longevity and comfort for increased weather resistance.

Features and Layout

Thoughtful organization is one of the strengths of the Utility Sling Bag. The bag is divided into two main compartments and two flat exterior pockets.

The front main compartment opens wide in an accordion style, revealing a clever system of four small and two larger dividers. This is where cables, chargers, a slim mouse, or other small tech accessories find their place.

An additional zippered mesh pocket and a pen holder complete the organization. The mesh pocket, in particular, is practical for storing all the small items that would otherwise fly around in the bag – be it individual batteries, pencil sharpeners, coins, or whatever other bits and bobs you carry.

The rear main compartment is simpler, offering a large space divided by only one wide and two smaller dividers. This compartment is well-suited for a small tablet, e-reader, or even a Nintendo Switch. The small divided pockets can then hold the corresponding charging cable or headphones.

It’s also a good place for a notebook. Here, the rigid form of the bag is once again an advantage, as it prevents the notebook from being creased during transport.

The exterior pockets on the front and back are ideal for quick access. The front pocket features a D-ring for attaching a set of keys. A matching key lanyard is not included but is offered separately by Collect, allowing users the freedom to choose their own solution or forgo it altogether.

The rear pocket, which sits securely against the body, is perfect for a passport, a slim notebook, or a wallet. If the bag isn’t filled to the brim, a modern smartphone like a Pixel 9 also fits here.

The bag has some well-thought-out details. For example, the padded carry handle sits comfortably in the hand and is positioned so you can grip the bag easily without the handle getting in the way.

The zipper pulls on all zippers are very functional, allowing for one-finger opening. With the otherwise very clean and minimalist aesthetic, the many cords might seem a bit overwhelming, but they could be replaced with more discreet versions if needed.

There are also eyelets on the zippers of the main compartments, through which a small lock can be threaded to secure the contents.

The nylon shoulder strap is adjustable in length and can be quickly detached thanks to the metal carabiners. Additional accessories can be attached to a loop directly on the strap.

What I personally miss on the strap is a buckle. Especially when carrying a backpack additionally, removing the bag quickly over the head is cumbersome. Such a buckle would significantly increase comfort. Of course, one can open a carabiner.

An interesting carrying option arises when attaching the strap to one of the side loops and an additional loop on the bottom of the back panel. This allows the bag to be carried vertically on the back, which is very comfortable, but makes quick access to the contents difficult, as the bag does not lie horizontally when swiveled forward.

In addition to the wide strap, a narrower version is also included. If you prefer the wide version, you can also use the narrow version as a camera strap.

The branding is refreshingly subtle, limited to the “Collect” logo on the front and a sewn-in label on the inside. Behind the logo is an NFC tag that, when scanned with a smartphone, leads to a website with information about the bag. An interesting further development would be the possibility to personalize this tag and use it, for example, as a digital business card.

Use as a Camera Bag

Now to the crucial question: How does the bag perform in everyday photographic use? It must be clearly stated: It is not a dedicated camera bag for a DSLR with a telephoto lens. Its strengths lie elsewhere.

In terms of size and protection, it is perfectly suited for a high-quality compact camera like a Ricoh GR, an Olympus XA, a Rollei 35, or even a 35mm camera from Yashica.

Even a small SLR like an Olympus OM-2 with a compact lens or a Leica rangefinder camera fits in the main compartment. However, in this case, the compartment is already quite full, and there is no room for much accessories, like multiple lenses or a larger flash.

The protection for the camera is certainly provided by the rigid, padded form of the bag. The camera is well protected from impacts in the main compartment, and the filled front and back pockets offer an additional buffer zone.

Nevertheless, one should be aware of the limitations and not carelessly set down or drop the bag. It offers everyday protection, but not the specialized padding of a pure photo bag.

However, for a city walk where you want to carry a small camera, spare film, a notebook, your smartphone, and a wallet, it is an excellent choice.

Conclusion on the Collect Utility Sling Bag

So, can the Collect Utility Sling Bag meet the requirements of a photographer? The answer is: yes, with limitations. It is a stylish and highly functional EDC bag that offers enough space and protection for a compact camera setup as well as personal and technical items.

The compartments help maintain order, and the high-quality, sustainable materials provide a good feeling. It is the ideal companion for the urban photographer who travels light and values style and organization.

Among the downsides, depending on taste, is the rigid box shape, which doesn’t adjust its space requirement to the contents – whether empty or full, it’s the same size – and doesn’t flexibly hug the body.

Another point is the dark interior lining, which, while visually appealing, limits the visibility of the contents.

Otherwise, the Collect Utility Sling Bag is a convincing overall package of high quality and a strong ethical foundation. For the photographer looking for a thoughtful, stylish, and protective bag for their small equipment, it is definitely worth considering.

Thanks for the detailed review! I’m intrigued by the ‘rigid form’ and how it protects contents. Overall, looks like a very thoughtfully designed product for light carry.
