The Cinestill Redrum 120 is a redscale film. The film is sold under the “Cinestill” brand. The material for the film is based on the CineStill 800T. It is produced by Kodak.
The Redrum 120 is designed for color photos. It is a normal color film, but it has been turned upside down. So the light first falls through the back when taking the picture. Through the orange mask and it creates monochrome images with red and orange hues.
The sensitivity of the film is specified with ISO 200. However, this value can be seen rather flexibly and invites experimentation. In general, the stronger the exposure, the more realistic the colors will be, or the red color palette will move more into the background. Here it offers itself to make with the first film role an exposure series, in order to decide then, which result convinces most.
Development of the film
To obtain images, the film must first be processed in the C-41 process. The development of color negative film is done by most photo labs. The C-41 process is a standardized development process. Development is offered by most professional laboratories. Afterwards, one can make prints from the images or digitize the film. If one creates the prints in the lab, it should be noted that the images are not color corrected, otherwise they may try to get the red tint out of the images.
Formats
The Cinestill Redrum can only be used in medium format cameras. There is no 35mm version as of yet. However, there are some alternative for this film format from other suppliers. You can easily make your own redscale film for the 35mm format. All you need is a color negative film and a second empty cartridge. You attach the film leader upside down to the empty cartridge and wind the film into the other cartridge in the dark.
