The Fujifilm Instax Wide 400 is an instant camera designed for the wide Instax Wide film format. It is characterized by its ease of use, robust design and ability to create high-quality large-format instant images. The camera is ideal for parties, events and weddings.

The camera was introduced in June 2024. It is the successor to the Instax Wide 300 presented in 2014.

Specifications and features

The Instax Wide 400 uses the Instax Wide film format, which produces an image size of 62 mm x 99 mm - twice the size of the standard Instax Mini format. The camera has a retractable two-group, two-element lens with a focal length of 95 mm and an aperture of f/14. The viewfinder is a real-image viewfinder with 0.37x magnification and a target point that makes image composition easier.

The camera offers manual switching between two shooting ranges: 0.9 m to 3 m for close-up shots and 3 m to infinity for normal shots and landscape shots. Exposure control is automatic and covers an EV range of 10.5 to 15 at ISO 800. The shutter is a program-controlled electronic shutter with shutter speeds between 1/64 second and 1/200 second.

The Instax Wide 400 has a built-in electronic flash with automatic light adjustment. Flash recovery time is about 7 seconds or less when using new batteries. The effective flash range is between 0.9 m and 3 m.

The camera is powered by four AA (LR6) alkaline batteries (eBay / Amazon*), which are sufficient for about 10 Instax Wide film packs of 10 shots each. The actual number of shots may vary depending on usage conditions. The camera has an automatic shut-off function that turns it off after 5 minutes of inactivity to save battery power.

Other features of the Instax Wide 400 include a film counter, a film confirmation window, a tripod thread and an included close-up lens for close-ups between 40 cm and 50 cm. The camera measures 162 mm x 98 mm x 123 mm and weighs 616 g without batteries, strap, film pack and close-up lens.

A matching camera for the instant camera is also available. The new price for the bag is currently around 30 euros.

Operation and handling

The Instax Wide 400 is easy to use. To turn on the camera, the lens ring is rotated, which extends the lens. The desired shooting area is also set by rotating the lens ring. Image composition is done using the real-image viewfinder, and the shutter button is pressed to take a photo. The developed image is automatically ejected, and the development time is about 90 seconds, depending on the ambient temperature.

The camera offers a few additional features, including a self-timer with four timing options (4, 6, 8 and 10 seconds) and an included camera angle adjustment accessory that can be used as a base for the camera, allowing for different viewing angles.

Creative Possibilities

The Instax Wide 400 offers a number of creative possibilities. The large image format is great for group photos, landscape shots and creative compositions. The included close-up lens allows for close-up shots of objects and people, and the built-in selfie mirror makes it easy to take selfies. The self-timer is ideal for group photos and self-portraits where the photographer also wants to be in the frame.

Films for the Fujifilm Instax Wide 400

A key aspect of the Fujifilm Instax Wide 400 is the Instax Wide film format. This format produces impressive images measuring 62 mm x 99 mm, which is about twice the size of the standard Instax Mini format.

The generous image format offers more space for subjects, details and creative compositions. It is particularly suitable for group photos, landscape shots and situations where a larger image format is desired.

The Instax Wide film is available in several variants, including color films (Instax Wide Film*), black and white films (Instax Wide Monochrome*) and films with special frames or designs that offer additional creative possibilities. The development time of the film is around 90 seconds, so you can quickly have the results of your shots in your hands.
