The Zenit Helios 44M 58mm f/2 is a manual fixed focal length lens from the Soviet manufacturer Zenit. It is still very popular today, especially due to its characteristic bokeh, which is often referred to as “swirly bokeh”. This effect is created by the special design of the lenses and creates a swirling, almost painterly background blur area. This gives the images a special vintage look that is particularly sought after in modern photography.
With its focal length of 58mm, the Helios 44M is ideal for portrait shots. The focal length is slightly longer than the classic 50mm normal focal length and subtly compresses the perspective, which makes for flattering portraits. The bright aperture of f/2 enables shots with a shallow depth of field and also contributes to the pleasant bokeh. It also allows you to take photos in poor lighting conditions without having to resort to high ISO values. The smallest aperture of f/16, on the other hand, offers enough scope for shots with a large depth of field, for example in landscape photography.
Focusing is done manually, which requires a certain amount of practice, but also increases creative control over the image. With a minimum focusing distance of 55 cm, the subject can be brought relatively close, which is useful for detail and close-ups, although macro photography in the true sense of the word is not possible.
The lens has an M42 screw connection. This connection standard was widespread in the former Soviet Union and enables adaptation to many modern camera systems using appropriate adapters. This means that the Helios 44M can also be used on digital SLR and mirrorless system cameras, and the special charm of this lens can also be used in digital photography.
With a filter thread of 52 mm, a wide variety of filters can be used, for example UV filters to protect the front lens, polarization filters to reduce reflections or ND filters to extend the exposure time. This opens up further creative possibilities and expands the range of applications of the lens.
The weight of the Helios 44M is 295 grams, making it relatively light and compact, making it a good companion for on the go. Despite the low price at which the lens is often available, it offers solid build quality and good optical performance, especially considering its age. It is an ideal lens for photographers who experiment with manual focusing and appreciate the look of old Soviet lenses.
