Vi Vante Camera Strap Review

Photography is all about the final image. But especially in analog photography, the journey to get there plays a crucial role. Every detail, from the camera and lens to the film, shutter release button, and even the camera bag, influences the result. An often underestimated but important detail is the camera strap. Here, every photographer has individual preferences.

In this review, we take a look at the camera straps from Vi Vante, a brand based in Florida, USA, that specializes in high-quality, detailed, and durable straps.

An ideal camera strap primarily offers secure support for the camera. Comfort, functionality, and an appealing design also play an important role. The optimal way to wear it – over the shoulder, around the neck, or as a wrist strap – depends on personal preferences and the camera in question.

Vi Vante offers both wrist straps and classic camera straps, suitable for both analog and digital cameras. In this review, we examine three different models: the “Matador Destiny,” the “Sheetline Evolution,” and the “Gaucho La Pampa.”

Vi Vante “Matador Destiny”: Luxury in Detail

The Matador is made of twelve interwoven strands of Italian leather and is handcrafted. It embodies “Quiet Luxury”: luxury that is not ostentatious, but impresses with subtle elegance. The leather feels pleasant in the hand, and the strap is comfortable to wear. It doesn’t immediately catch the eye, but reveals its quality on closer inspection – details that other photographers, in particular, are likely to notice.

The Matador can be attached to cameras with slot or split-ring attachments. Two leather protectors are included for split-ring attachments to prevent scratches. The length is adjustable between 104 cm and 122 cm. The strap can be worn around the neck, over the shoulder, or across the body. Since it has no rubberized grip, the camera could theoretically slide forward when bending over.

The Matador is particularly suitable for cameras like the Leica M6, rangefinder cameras from Minolta, or SLR cameras from Olympus and Canon, as it distributes the weight well with these models. It is less suitable for very heavy cameras, as the weight distribution is then suboptimal.

Vi Vante “Sheetline Evolution”: Flexibility and Minimalism

Similar to the Matador, the Sheetline Evolution is a braided rope strap, but made of nylon instead of leather. It offers the comfort of a rope strap and is even softer and significantly more flexible compared to the Matador. The strap can be quickly shortened with a simple knot – practical when stowing the camera in a bag or when you don’t want the strap dangling while taking photos.

Attachment is via split rings with a protective, fold-away leather piece. The Sheetline Evolution is not length-adjustable. It is naturally recommended for the same camera models as the Matador.

Vi Vante “Gaucho La Pampa”: Classic Comfort

The Gaucho is a classic camera strap, often supplied with analog SLR cameras. Vi Vante offers it in various patterns; the “La Pampa” model was tested.

The strap is partly made of fabric and mostly leather. The body-facing surface is soft and comfortable to wear, both around the neck and over the shoulder. The length is adjustable between 106 cm and 117 cm.

Due to its width, the Gaucho distributes weight well and is therefore also suitable for heavier cameras like Yashica TLR medium format cameras or Canon EOS SLRs with larger lenses. Visually, it goes well with retro cameras like the Olympus PEN or toy cameras like the Holga or Diana F+, although the latter almost appear too small for the strap.

Conclusion

All three straps are excellently crafted and impress with their attention to detail, especially the cleanly finished ends of the rope straps. They offer a secure hold and convey a feeling of reliability. The straps are in the upper price segment but represent a long-term investment that will provide lasting enjoyment.

The choice of the right strap depends on individual needs. The Matador impresses with its luxurious feel and elegant design. The Sheetline Evolution scores with flexibility and compactness. The Gaucho is recommended for heavier cameras and offers high wearing comfort.

Before purchasing, you should consider how you want to carry the camera and what strap length is required for this. Body size plays an important role. There are limitations in the quick adjustability of the length. For example, someone who carries the camera crossbody and wants to quickly adjust the length to look through the viewfinder will not be optimally served by any of these models.

All straps can be ordered online directly from Vi Vante. Shipping is from the USA, and international shipping is offered.

I’ve been looking for a replacement leather strap and this one caught my eye. The design looks interesting, and I’m curious to see the quality in person. Definitely adding it to my list!
