Material

The first contact with the Slimfold Passport Wallet is an interesting tactile experience. Instead of leather or simple plastic, you encounter a so-called Soft Shell material. Slimfold describes it as a mixture that aims to be reminiscent of GORE-TEX and Kevlar in its properties.

This description raises high expectations for durability and resilience. The material feels soft, almost fabric-like, yet has a fine, slightly rough surface texture.

The Slimfold Passport Wallet opts for a compact size and low weight. At only about 74 grams, it is feather-light. The dimensions (approx. 10 x 13 cm) are only slightly larger than those of a standard passport.

Even when fully packed with a passport, several cards, and some cash, the profile remains surprisingly flat. It fits into most jacket or trouser pockets. For me, a very important point when traveling.

Features

In designing the interior, Slimfold has clearly focused on minimalist functionality.

On one side, there is the main compartment for the passport. This is designed so that the passport can be easily inserted and, above all, removed. This proves to be extremely practical in everyday travel, for example at e-gates at the airport or during passport control, where speed is often essential. You don’t have to fumble awkwardly to pull the document out of a too-tight sleeve.

Opposite, there are four card slots. The design is space-saving: the cards lie partially on top of each other, reducing the overall thickness of the wallet. Each slot can easily hold two cards, allowing for a total capacity of eight cards.

The disadvantage of this arrangement is that the lower card in each slot is not directly visible. You have to know which card is where. Theoretically, you could overlook that you have a certain card with you, but in practice, this is a very minor drawback that one quickly gets used to.

Between the two main sides, there is a small, integrated pen holder. It would have been desirable if a suitable small pen were included directly.

Another strength of the wallet is its versatility. When not traveling, the passport holder can be excellently used as a cover for a small notebook of the appropriate size. Thus, the travel wallet becomes a daily companion for notes and thoughts. Of course, you can also simply use it as a slightly larger wallet for everyday life.

AirTag Integration

The Slimfold Passport Wallet features a special compartment for an Apple AirTag or a similar tracker. This compartment is positioned behind the passport slot, which helps to distribute the additional thickness of the tracker evenly. This keeps the wallet relatively flat despite the AirTag.

The ability to locate your most important documents in case of loss offers additional security and peace of mind when traveling. Even though the tracker is palpable through the thin material, the integration is well done and does not impair other functionality.

Field Test on a Japan Trip

On a multi-week photo trip through Japan, the Slimfold Passport Wallet fully demonstrated its strengths. Especially in Japan, tourists often rely on their passports, as they can shop tax-free in many stores. The passport must be presented with every purchase. The ease of removal from the Slimfold was a blessing here and sped up the process at the checkout every time.

My daily wallet was an even smaller card holder containing only cash for the day and my Suica card for local transport. In the Passport Wallet, on the other hand, I kept my passport, my main credit card, and a backup card.

This separation of daily finances and important travel documents gave me an additional sense of security. Should my small wallet be lost or stolen, the most important documents and a backup payment method would still be safe with me. Everything had its designated, secure place.
