The Rollei Infrared 400/400S presents itself as a versatile and experimental black and white film that is a remarkable addition to any photographer’s tool collection. The manufacturer Agfa is responsible for the production of this special film for Rollei, which is characterised by an extended sensitisation into the infrared range. The development process of this film is similar to that of a regular black and white film, which makes it an excellent choice for creative or scientific photo projects.

In its nature, Rollei Infrared shows itself as a super-panchromatic black and white film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 200/24° to 400/27°. A key aspect that sets it apart from other films is its high sensitivity to the infrared region of the light spectrum. This allows for an unusual, yet precise tonal reproduction, which comes into its own especially when using black filters. This specific characteristic makes it a predestined choice for experimental photography and creative applications, but it can also prove useful in scientific photography.

The “S” in the 400S designation refers to its synthetic base, as the film has been cast on a polyester film base that makes it particularly durable and resistant. This material also offers excellent flatness, supported by an anti-curling layer, which makes the film easier to handle and process.

The film is offered in a variety of formats: 35mm, medium format and flat (4×5), making it suitable for a wide range of cameras and projects. Other technical data that underline its quality are its high resolving power with a contrast of 1000:1, which corresponds to 160 lines/mm, and a graininess of RMS(x1000) = 11. Furthermore, it shows a pronounced response to the respective shooting filter up to the infrared range.

One of its outstanding features is the fine differentiation of the infrared spectrum, depending on the filter used, with wavelengths between 715-750nm being recommended. In addition, it offers good pull-push properties and a very good maximum blackness. Thanks to its transparency, it is optimally suited for scanning and can also be used as a slide. Thus, this film is especially recommended for experimental photographers who are willing to go beyond the limits of traditional photography.

The images shown were taken with an Olympus OM-2 with a 50mm f/1.4. The Rollei Infrared was already 4 years expired at the time of exposure. The film was developed with Adox Atomal 49 developer. The film was developed at 21 degrees for 10 minutes. The developer was not diluted.
