The Ember Wolves Alpha Pack Tactical Edition in the White Cameo variant is designed to bring order to everyday gear while providing quick access. In this hands-on review, I look at how well the bag actually performs in daily use and when transporting photo accessories.
Technical Data: Material, Dimensions, and Versions
Looking at the hard facts, the choice of materials stands out first. The Tactical Edition differs from the standard version mainly in the outer fabric.
Ember Wolves uses an X50 fabric from Dimension Polyant with a thickness of 500 denier, while the regular version uses a slightly lighter 210 denier fabric. The capacity is about 1.8 liters, making the bag quite compact.
In terms of dimensions, the model measures about 20 centimeters in width, 12 centimeters in height, and 7.5 centimeters in depth. Instead of plastic, the manufacturer uses metal fittings for the eyelets and buckles, which benefits durability.
For protection against moisture, YKK Aquaguard zippers are used. The shoulder strap is held together by a magnetic Fidlock V Buckle closure, and the strap can be completely removed from the bag if needed.
The length can be adjusted as needed. The bag can be worn in the front, on the back, or as a hip bag. Especially on the back, the bag conforms well to the body.
First Impression and Build Quality
Upon unboxing, the very understated appearance immediately stands out. Design is always a matter of taste, but it is extremely pleasant that they have completely omitted any logos or flashy prints on the outside, except for a tiny tag on the strap. This gives a very matte and unobtrusive look.
The build quality appears clean, with all seams straight. If you like, you can easily remove the zipper pulls and replace them with your own cords. Unfortunately, this does not work with the sewn-in keychain inside; that keychain cannot be removed.
A look inside reveals a rather dark lining. Personally, I would prefer a light lining, as it makes it easier to find small items in the bag. Given the manageable size of the bag, the dark lining is not a huge issue, but you should know that other color variants or versions of the manufacturer come with a bright orange lining that provides better orientation.

In everyday use, the two magnetic closures are clearly the main feature. There is a small compartment at the front and direct access to the smartphone at the back. This idea is simply extremely practical, as you constantly have your phone in hand while on the go.
In addition to the speed of access, the closure has the huge advantage that you don't have to close it separately afterward. You just open the bag, take out the smartphone, and you're done – the magnets do the rest on their own.
When traveling or on the move, all important items are within easy reach. Whether it's headphones, some cash, or documents, everything stays close to your body. Your passport is also quickly at hand.
However, with a German passport, you need to be a bit careful. The passport is basically slightly too large to just loosely slip into the compartment. To ensure the magnets close properly, it's best to slide the document briefly under the upper magnetic flap. If you do that, the compartment closes neatly.
An interesting extra for smartphone handling is the integrated MagSafe function. A magnetic ring is integrated into the rear quick-access compartment, designed to work with Apple MagSafe accessories and compatible cases. This allows you to fix the smartphone in place within the compartment.
It becomes even more practical when you place a compact MagSafe power bank inside. This way, you can charge your phone wirelessly while carrying it in the bag, without annoying cables getting in the way or having to open the bag separately.
Directly behind the front magnetic access, there is a section with elastic loops. These loops provide secure slots for slim items that would otherwise lie loose at the bottom of the bag. For example, you can safely insert a short pen, a small EDC flashlight, a multitool, or coiled charging cables.
The elasticity of the bands holds the items firmly in place, so nothing rattles while walking. However, for very thick items, the individual loops are a bit tight, so you should stick to slimmer tools and cables.
Another elastic loop is located in the main compartment. Here, you can attach a longer pen.
The compartment on the back, which is actually intended for storing the shoulder strap, I personally don't need. If I want to use a bag without a strap, I simply put the strap in my backpack or leave it at home.
Without this extra, the back would look even cleaner and flatter. You could theoretically put a small selfie stick, a compact umbrella, or a small bottle in this compartment. But the compartment is actually too small for that. There is simply a lack of an extra fastening option to prevent things from falling out, and if you squeeze something solid in there, it ends up pressing directly against your body.
Inside, there are two mesh pockets with zippers that are really useful. Small items like memory cards, batteries, or loose change from the bakery can be stored there perfectly without flying around uncontrolled in the bag.
For the large mesh pocket without a zipper, they could have left out the elastic edge at the top. Rubber bands simply stretch out over time with daily use, and here you don't really need the elastic to keep the contents in place.
I'm not entirely sure about the width of the strap. I would find a slightly narrower strap as an alternative option quite interesting. Since the strap can be removed anyway, such a change would technically not be a problem. A narrower strap would keep the overall profile a bit smaller. Additionally, on hot summer days, you have less fabric on your skin, which can improve wearing comfort in heat.

If you use the Alpha Pack for photographic purposes, you usually use it as a small organizer for accessories or as protection for a very compact camera. For example, you could use the bag for your everyday items plus a small lens, batteries, memory cards, or films. You would then carry the camera separately.
Of course, it is also possible to store a camera in the bag, depending on the size of the camera and what else you have in the bag. A compact camera like the Ricoh GR, or an action camera like the DJI Osmo Nano, is no problem at all. Even a relatively large camera like the Instax Mini 13 fits in the bag, but then it is already very full.
The main compartment can be fully opened, which is a real advantage when packing on a table or when using it as a standing bag. You immediately see where everything is. However, when walking, I am a bit torn about this clamshell design. You have to be careful not to accidentally unzip the zippers completely when there are loose items in the middle area. Otherwise, something can quickly fall to the ground.
But if you wear the bag on your body and hold it at an angle of about 45 degrees in front of you, a simple trick works. If you open one zipper side completely and the other side only a little, you can reach in very quickly without the front flap falling down. A small fabric bridge or a tab connecting the two sides might be the ideal solution here to prevent the front from tipping over unintentionally.
An important point is the zippers. The installed Aquaguard zippers effectively keep rain out, but they are noticeably harder to pull than normal YKK zippers. Here you have to choose between quick access and good weather protection. Which point is more important depends heavily on where you use it.
Here in Germany, the weather is usually easy to predict. If a shower is threatening, you just take an umbrella, pull your jacket over the bag, or use a small plastic bag as emergency protection. In everyday life, I often prefer a smooth-running zipper.
In tropical regions with sudden downpours, things are different; there you gladly accept the heavier pull for better sealing. Nevertheless, you should keep in mind that even with Aquaguard zippers, the bag is not 100% waterproof. In strong wind and continuous rain, moisture can also enter through the magnetic closures.
Conclusion
