The Sakk Nomad Sling Bag is aimed at photographers who are looking for a spacious alternative to the classic camera backpack and prefer to carry their gear compactly over one shoulder. In this review, we look at the strengths and weaknesses of the bag in everyday photography.
Materials & Size
The exterior of the bag is made of weather-resistant 420D ripstop nylon, which, combined with PU-coated YKK zippers, provides solid protection against moisture and dirt. However, due to this dense coating, the zippers on the main compartment run noticeably stiffly, requiring a bit more pulling force when opening quickly.
An additional fabric flap over the zipper protects the gear from penetrating moisture, but in practice, it can partially block access to the interior. You often have to fold the fabric edge aside first to remove lenses or camera bodies unobstructed.
With external dimensions of 38 centimeters in height, 28 centimeters in width, and a depth of 15 centimeters, the Sling Bag offers a balanced ratio of storage space and form factor. The empty weight is a moderate 750 grams, so the bag itself hardly weighs anything, and the actual load is almost exclusively determined by the equipment carried.
If you remove the dividers, the bag can also be made relatively flat. This makes it easy to stow in a suitcase when traveling if you only want to use it on-site.
On the bottom, additional aluminum hooks are attached, allowing a compact tripod to be secured when needed. You can also attach a compact umbrella or a jacket here.
Compartments and Layout
The interior can be individually divided using three Velcro elements to securely accommodate different equipment configurations.
How much gear ultimately fits depends on individual priorities. In our practical test, the focus was on a mobile flash setup. In the ten-liter main compartment, a Sony A7R II body, two lenses, two speedlights, and a compact studio flash found their place without any problems.
Additionally, the main compartment has further subdivisions for compact accessories. There are two larger slip pockets, which are well suited for filters, for example. Behind them, there is another area behind a zipper, ideal for cables, batteries, and other small items.
In addition to the camera compartment, the bag features a laptop compartment on the back for computers up to a 14-inch display size, as well as a place for a tablet.
The front exterior pocket with a key clip is less thoughtfully designed. Unlike the main compartment, it lacks a water-repellent zipper. Due to the upward-open edge guide, moisture can collect on the zipper tape in the rain.
Since this pocket is very flat anyway and primarily offers space for thin cables or memory cards, it could have been omitted.
On the back side facing the body, there is already a protected pocket for travel documents or a wallet that extends almost the entire width of the bag. Additionally, on the padded back, there is a quick-access pocket for a smartphone or other items you need to stow quickly.
In Practice
In everyday photography, the bag initially stands out with some practical details that make daily use easier. The robust buckle on the shoulder strap proves particularly helpful in use, as the bag can be opened and removed with a quick hand movement without having to awkwardly pull it over your head.
The sturdy carrying handle on the top is also a noticeable help for quickly grabbing the bag when loading it into the car or during a quick change of location in the studio. When traveling, the rear pass-through for trolley handles provides welcome support for hassle-free transport.
However, when the bag is carried on foot over longer periods, the ergonomic limitations of the design become more apparent. The shoulder strap is sewn firmly to the body and cannot be removed or replaced. Additionally, since there is no movable or rotating attachment, the strap only adapts to natural walking movements to a limited extent.
The integrated shoulder pad does cushion the weight in principle, but it looks somewhat bulky and does not harmonize stylistically with the rest of the bag's design language. When fully loaded with a camera body, multiple flashes, lenses, and a computer, a wider strap would have been a good solution in my opinion.
Conclusion
In summary, the Sakk Nomad Sling Bag is suitable for photographers who want to transport a larger setup including a laptop and prefer the direct handling of a shoulder bag. It offers reliable protection in the main compartment and a practical interior layout for cameras, lenses, and compact lighting equipment.
Especially for assignments like on-site portrait sessions or manageable photo walks, the bag proves useful because you can access your gear while standing without having to set the entire bag down on wet or dirty ground.
At the same time, the design requires some conscious compromises. The weatherproof zippers and the protective fabric flap effectively keep moisture out, but they noticeably slow down opening compared to more open systems. The unprotected front exterior pocket and the rigid strap attachment without a swivel joint also show that there is still room for improvement in ergonomics and detail execution.
The fundamental disadvantage lies in the nature of the sling concept, as the entire weight of the equipment rests permanently on one shoulder during longer walks. If you plan for this quirk and primarily use the bag for targeted transitions between different locations or generally have no problem with it, you get a spacious transport solution for demanding setups away from classic camera backpacks.
