After the prologue clarified why the choice fell on the compact Fujifilm X-E5 with interchangeable mount, the next practical question was immediately on the table: Where should the body actually come from?

For those who come from analog photography, buying used equipment is basically the most normal thing in the world. Hardly anyone would think of looking for a brand-new analog camera in a store, if only because there are no current new releases.

But even in the digital photography world, looking at the used market is almost always worthwhile. Cameras today age nowhere near as rapidly as in the early years of sensor development. A body captures light exactly the same way as a fresh specimen.

For me personally, buying new from a traditional specialist dealer has long been the exception, because a well-maintained camera does the same job and, on top of that, takes away the worry about the very first small scratch in everyday use.

Buying privately on the well-known marketplaces is sometimes like a lucky dip, where you have to hope that the sensor is actually clean, the buttons don't stick, and the term "like new" hasn't been interpreted too generously.

Unboxing

So the unboxing moment was all the more pleasing: The camera arrived in the complete original packaging, neatly packed including the original strap and the printed user manual. After unboxing and a thorough inspection under good working light, the visual impression was immediately confirmed.

The body is practically like new, the leatherette is taut, there is no sign of wear on the mount, and the display shows no trace of previous use. The dials and buttons also have exactly the solid, precise pressure point you would expect from a reliable tool.
