Sometimes a modern mirrorless camera like the Fujifilm X-E5 lacks exactly the small detail that rescues spontaneous snapshots in dim light: a built-in flash.
The Zeniko ZT08 fills that gap and promises fully automatic exposure metering in a handy miniature format. In this hands-on review, we examine how this small accessory performs in everyday photography.

Technical Specifications and Features of the Zeniko ZT08
The Zeniko ZT08 stands out above all for its minimalist construction, which visually complements the classic rangefinder design of the Fujifilm X-E5 extremely well. The housing is largely made of lightweight aluminum, giving the device a solid and high-quality feel. On the scale, the flash is barely noticeable: at just 47 grams, the overall weight of your gear remains almost unchanged.
Inside, a permanently installed lithium-ion battery powers the unit, which can conveniently be charged via USB-C. This saves you from carrying spare AAA batteries or bulky special chargers when traveling. For its tiny form factor, the flash output is designed with a guide number in the single digits, which is more than sufficient for distances of two to three meters.
The device can be controlled either through automatic TTL metering, in which the camera determines the required amount of light through the lens, or through manual power adjustment in several steps. The small display keeps the settings always in view. This also applies when adjusting the TTL exposure compensation (±3 stops).
At low output, the flash recycling time is a matter of fractions of a second, but after a full discharge it takes a little while to recharge. Due to its design, the device does not support high-speed sync, so photographers remain bound to the camera's regular flash sync speed.
The Zeniko ZT08 on the Fujifilm X-E5

The combination of the compact Fujifilm X-E5 and the Zeniko ZT08 is a perfect match. The size is truly excellent, since the small flash barely protrudes beyond the edge of the housing. Anyone who likes to roam the streets with light luggage will appreciate its unobtrusive appearance. It is ideal as an everyday flash that can simply stay mounted without getting in the way when you are shooting without it. It also works well as a backup for another flash in your camera bag or jacket pocket, since you can carry it without it adding significant weight or taking up much space.

The Zeniko ZT08 is the perfect TTL flash to always have with you. It replaces the built-in flash for cameras that lack one, and this is exactly where the accessory shines on the X-E5.
Whether you want to brighten faces in a restaurant, at family celebrations, or in dimly lit alleys, simply attach the device to the hot shoe and start shooting. The TTL communication with the Fujifilm system works reliably in most cases and delivers well-balanced exposures without completely destroying the mood of the existing ambient light.

Of course, the compact design requires certain compromises. Because the reflector is fixed facing forward, the light cannot be bounced off walls or ceilings. The frontal light recalls the typical look of classic compact cameras from past decades, which lends portraits a certain charm but produces harsh flash light.
In addition, the light output understandably reaches its limits with larger groups or at long distances. It would also be great if it supported HSS. In bright sunlight with a wide-open aperture, photographers quickly run into the camera's shutter speed limit. With high-speed sync, the ZT08 could be used even more flexibly as a targeted fill flash in bright sunshine. However, once you are aware of these limits, you quickly adapt to them in everyday shooting.
A useful accessory included in the package is the small clip-on diffuser made of frosted plastic, which fits precisely in front of the flash tube. With frontal on-camera flashes of this type, faces at close range tend to show pronounced shadow edges and unflattering shiny skin areas, which the small white attachment is meant to soften noticeably.
However, the diffuser has the drawback that it absorbs light and therefore reduces output. You lose roughly 1 2/3 stops when using it. For this reason, I would rather use it only occasionally.

Conclusion on the Mini Clip-On Flash
The Zeniko ZT08 does not aim to replace a heavy studio flash unit. Instead, it positions itself as an uncomplicated companion for every day. Its strengths lie in the high-quality build, the practical USB-C charging, and the straightforward TTL exposure, which reliably produces good snapshots.
Weaknesses such as the lack of a swivel reflector and the lack of support for short shutter speeds can be easily forgiven given its tiny dimensions.
For owners of compact cameras that have no built-in flash, the ZT08 is a practical and discreet addition.
