The Rainbow Road 50D/5203 is a color negative film that is available under the Rainbow Road brand. It can be purchased in 2024 from the photo retailer AFilm.me from Bangkok, Thailand.
It is manufactured by Kodak and is based on the VISION3 50D, a film material that was originally designed for cinema film production. Kodak normally only offers this material in large quantities for film cameras. In order to make it usable for 35mm cameras, the film is transferred from large rolls into 35mm cartridges.
Developing the film
The Rainbow Road 50D/5203 is designed for development in the ECN-2 process, as is common with the Kodak VISION3 50D. This process is similar to the C-41 process used for standard color negative films, but has some differences.
A special protective layer in the ECN-2 material ensures that it meets the requirements of motion picture cameras. If the material is developed using the C-41 process, the developing baths can become contaminated and unusable.
For photographers who do not have access to a lab with ECN-2 processes, it makes more sense to use an adapted version of the VISION3 50D that has been specially converted for the C-41 process.
