The color negative film Nolan 50D/5203, sold under the brand name Nolan, is no longer available in stores. It was manufactured by Kodak and is based on the Kodak VISION3 50D, a film originally developed for cinema production.
The material is usually produced in large quantities for film cameras. To make it accessible for 35mm cameras, the film is rewound from large rolls onto 35mm cartridges.
It is compatible with most 35mm cameras and has a sensitivity of ISO 50, optimized for daylight photography. Due to the low light sensitivity, it is recommended to use a fast lens or to take photos in bright sunshine.
Developing the film
The Kodak VISION3 50D is designed for processing in the ECN-2 process. Photographers who use the Nolan 50D/5203 therefore need a laboratory that offers this special process.
Compared to the usual C-41 process used for standard color negative films, the ECN-2 process has some differences. One important feature is a protective layer that was specially developed for use in motion picture cameras.
If the film is processed using the C-41 process, this layer can contaminate and damage the chemicals. For users without access to an ECN-2 laboratory, we recommend an adapted version of the VISION3 50D that has been specially modified for the C-41 process.
