The Polaroid Sun 640 is an instant camera. The functionality of the model is the same as the Polaroid One Step Flash. Admittedly, this camera is no longer made today.

The Polaroid Sun 640 impresses with its ease of use. The usual setting options for standard functions are not available on this camera. Because of this simple entry level, the camera can be operated by anyone and is suitable for many uses. For example, it is a good choice for parties and weddings. It is also a great companion on vacation.

Changing the basic exposure settings is not possible. There is no option for freely setting the shutter speed and aperture.

The lens is a fixed focal length. It cannot be exchanged. Many modern cameras have a zoom function. This functionality is not present in this model. You should not approach the subject closer than 120 cm. Otherwise, you won’t recognize much in the pictures in the end.

The camera has a built-in flash. It is used automatically. The small aperture makes the use of the flash useful especially indoors.

Films for the Polaroid Sun 640

Of course, instant film is also needed for the Polaroid instant camera. The original film material of the American photo pioneer Polaroid can no longer be found in stores. Fresh films have been produced again since 2010 and are now also sold under the old brand name.

There is a black-and-white and a color film available for purchase. For color photos with the instant camera, you can reach for the Polaroid Color Film for 600*. The right choice for monochrome pictures is the Polaroid B&W Film for 600*. Both instant films perform well in test reports.

There are a full eight photos in a box. The instant films are very sensitive to light. Contact with light before shooting should therefore be avoided. Do not store the unexposed film material in the sun or in a damp place.

As defined during development, an image measures 10.8 x 8.8 cm. The captured image occupies an area of 7.7 by 7.7 cm. The remaining area of the Polaroid image is white. However, there are also Polaroid films with colorful frames.

Not compatible with the Polaroid Sun 640 are the instant films from Fujifilm.

Batteries

What kind of batteries do you need for the camera? With this type of camera, the power source is found in the cartridge containing the unexposed images. It contains enough power for all unexposed photos in the film cassette. Even when the flash is used. So changing the film also provides a new battery. This is the only battery needed for the camera.

The film cassette, because of the battery, should not be thrown in the household trash. It is best to take the plastic cassette or just the battery to a suitable local drop-off location.

Manual for the Polaroid Sun 640

How to take photos with the instant camera? A quick guide to how the Polaroid camera works.

First, you need to load the camera with the film. The film door opens by pressing the slider on the side of the housing. Now the cassette with the film material can be inserted. Then the flap can be closed again. The protective film is now automatically removed from the camera.

Now you can take pictures. To do this, aim the camera at the subject and press the shutter release button. The electric motor inside the camera transports the exposed image from the film cassette through two rollers. This distributes the developing chemicals over the image. After a few minutes, you have the finished image in your hand.

Alternative Models

If you can’t find the camera, you can use other options. The first option is, of course, the Polaroid One Step Flash. It offers the same features and needs the same films.

You might also want cameras from other manufacturers as an alternative. Exciting models include the LomoInstant Automat* and Instax Mini EVO*. Here, too, you can still easily purchase the film material.

This is a great overview of the Polaroid Sun 640 instant camera. It’s clear that this camera is easy to use and suitable for a variety of situations, such as parties and vacations. It’s worth noting that the fixed lens and lack of manual exposure controls may be limiting for more advanced photographers, but for those looking for a simple and fun camera, the Polaroid Sun 640 could be a great choice. The built-in flash is a useful feature, especially in low light conditions. Overall, it’s a classic and iconic camera that is no longer in production today.
