The Polaroid 636 AF is an instant camera from Polaroid. The model is based on the Polaroid One Step Autofocus in terms of functionality.

The Polaroid 636 AF is easy to use. Most of the setting options found on other types of cameras have been omitted. Because it is so easy to use, there is a low threshold for entry and thus versatility of use. It is an excellent choice for parties and also looks great at weddings. It is also a good choice for vacations.

Changing the recording settings is not possible. There is no possibility to freely adjust shutter speed and aperture. The Polaroid camera comes with a pre-installed fixed lens. The lens does not have a zoom function. So, as an alternative to pressing the zoom button, you have to move towards the subject until it is completely in the picture.

Do you also find a flash with the camera? Yes, as is typical for this type of camera, you’ll find a built-in flash. It fires automatically when the picture is taken. Especially in low light conditions, the flash is one of the most significant functions.

Films for the Polaroid 636 AF

Indispensable for taking photos with the Polaroid 636 AF are the appropriate instant films. Production of the original consumables has since been discontinued. Don’t worry, you can buy film for the old cameras again.

Material is available for color photos and monochrome images. The appropriate choice for color photos is Polaroid Color Film for 600*. Black and white photography is possible with the Polaroid B&W Film for 600*. In many tests, they can do well.

There are eight images in one pack. Under no circumstances should the photosensitive material come into contact with light. The unexposed film material should be stored in a cool and dry place.

According to the standard, one image measures 10.8 x 8.8 cm. In this case, the captured image takes up an area of 7.7 by 7.7 cm. The remaining area is completed by the familiar frame around the Polaroid picture. Are white frames too boring? Then there are also editions with colorful frames.

The films from Fujifilm can not be used with the instant camera.

Batteries

Do you need batteries for the instant camera? With this type of camera, you can find the power source in the cartridge with the unexposed pictures. The disposable battery is sufficient for all unexposed images in the cassette. Even when using the flash for each exposure. So when you replace the film, you also replace the power source of the camera. An additional battery is not necessary.

If the camera with film has been stored for a long time, the battery may have discharged. Without sufficient power supply, the camera will of course no longer function. In this case, it is enough to remove the photo film and replace it with new film material.

Instructions for using the Polaroid 636 AF

How to use the instant camera? A clear guide on how to use the Polaroid 636 AF.

The first step is to load the film. For this, the small slider on the side is pushed forward. This opens the film door. Now the cassette with the film material can be inserted. After that, the flap can be locked again. The camera now ejects the plastic protective film of the film.

Now you can start taking pictures. To do this, press the subject with the camera and press the shutter release button. The motor inside the camera transports the image out of the film cassette. In the process, it passes through two rollers that distribute the chemistry for development over the image. After a few minutes, the development is complete and you can view the image.

Alternative Models

If you can’t locate the camera, you can opt for alternatives. One obvious alternative would be the Polaroid One Step Autofocus. It comes with the same feature set and needs the same film stock.

You might also want cameras from other manufacturers as an alternative. Two particular models that don’t come from Polaroid are the Diana Instant Square* and Instax Mini 90*. Suitable film material is also still being produced for both cameras.
