The ORWO N 74 plus is a black and white film. It is produced by Filmotec GmbH in Wolfen, Saxony-Anhalt. The film is actually designed for use in film production. Filmotec lists documentary films, reportage, underwater and industrial cinematography as its preferred areas of application.
The ORWO N 74 plus is a classic black-and-white film for creating monochrome images. It is characterized by its panchromatic sensitization. It has a sensitivity of ISO 400, but can also be pushed or pulled a few steps. With less sensitivity there is the UN 54 of the same manufacturer.
Filmotec describes the negative film N74 Plus as a film with a large exposure range for unfavourable light conditions and which, compared to its predecessor, is characterised by considerably improved gliding properties, extremely low abrasion and excellent antistatic behaviour. The latter properties are especially important for use in a film camera.
The emulsion is cast onto a triacetate carrier. The carrier material has a thickness of 135 µm. The film consists of six layers, gelatine protection layer, emulsion layer 1, emulsion layer 2, preparation layer, carrier and antistatic backing layer.
Development of the film
For the development of the N 74 plus, a black-and-white developer must be used. The development can take place in a photo laboratory. You have more control over the result if you develop the film yourself. When developing the film, it must be pitch-black.
Availability and Formats
Buying the N 74 as a private person is not so easy. Filmotec sells the film as 35mm film, but only as yard goods in larger quantities. It is also available as 16 mm film for film production. On request Filmotec can also supply other formats, but a minimum order quantity is required.
The temperature of unexposed film material during storage should be below 13 degrees Celsius if stored for more than 12 months. The humidity should be between 50 and 70 percent. Darkness during storage is also an advantage. After exposure it should be processed as quickly as possible and not stored for even longer periods.
