Godox A2: Compact Xenon Flash for Smartphones

Accessory manufacturer Godox is expanding its range for mobile camera systems with a compact flash unit. The A2 model uses a Xenon flash tube, departing from the LEDs built into phones. This technology enables very short flash durations for sharply capturing fast motion. At ISO 100 sensitivity, the system achieves a guide number of about 15. The illumination is primarily designed for subjects at working distances of up to two meters.

Exposure control is available either through automatic TTL metering or manual settings. A key feature is high-speed sync, which supports shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second. This allows the flash to be used for fill lighting while keeping the background exposure balanced even in bright sunlight. In addition to the flash tube, a dual-color LED light is integrated. Its variable color temperature serves for continuous illumination of video scenes.

Operation is handled via the manufacturer's camera app. Signal transmission to the smartphone is wireless via Bluetooth, supported by an NFC chip for quick pairing.

Within the user interface, parameters such as shutter speeds and power levels can be set. Different exposure profiles control contrast behavior.

The A2 can be used directly on the smartphone or standalone in the room. A future wireless trigger is also intended to enable control in conjunction with larger flash units from the manufacturer.

The palm-sized housing features magnets on both sides. The back adheres to compatible phones or metallic surfaces, but it can also be mounted on tripods.

On the front, a magnetic ring accepts various light modifiers. Available modifiers include honeycomb grids and barn doors. A light tube bundles the beam, while a magnetic conversion filter adapts the light to warm artificial light.
