The Chinese accessory and lens manufacturer 7Artisans is expanding its range of lenses with autofocus. The 7Artisans AF 40mm f/2.5 is now also available for cameras with Nikon Z and L-Mount. Originally, this prime lens was launched for Sony's E-Mount. With the two new variants, the company now serves other common full-frame camera systems.
The focal length of 40 millimeters sits between the classic 35mm and 50mm focal lengths. The lens offers a natural angle of view suitable for documentation, everyday shots, and street photography. With the expansion of system mounts, Nikon users and those with cameras from the L-Mount Alliance (Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma) now also get access to this compact prime lens.
Optical Construction and Technical Performance
Inside the lens, an optical construction of seven lenses arranged in six groups works. Specialized glass elements are used to reduce optical aberrations such as chromatic aberration and distortion. The aperture consists of nine rounded blades, which should support a smooth background blur.
With a maximum aperture of f/2.5, the optics provide moderate light reserves while maintaining a compact body size. The minimum focusing distance is 40 centimeters. On the front, there is a filter thread with a diameter of 46 millimeters for the use of screw-in filters.
For automatic focusing, the lens uses an STM stepping motor that enables quiet and continuous focus tracking. The autofocus also supports face and eye detection of modern camera bodies.
Build Quality and Handling in Practice
The body weighs just under 90 grams, making it one of the lightest prime lenses for full-frame systems. The total length is only four centimeters. Despite the low weight, the bayonet mount is made of metal, while the outer shell is made of plastic.
On the lens body, there is a switch for changing between autofocus and manual focus, as well as a manual aperture ring. Additionally, the manufacturer integrates a customizable function button. At the bayonet, there is a USB-C interface. This is used to perform future firmware updates via the computer if needed.
Availability and Test Report
The new versions for Nikon Z and L-Mount are aimed at photographers who prefer portable equipment and seek a versatile everyday focal length. Positioned in the lower price segment, the lens serves as an addition for various applications.
