The Kodak Law Enforcement LE400 film is a 35mm format color negative film designed specifically for law enforcement use. This film is ideal for crime scene photography, forensic lab photography, and macro applications. Ordering could be done in forensics, police and investigative agencies.

With the advent of digital photography, which offered many advantages for this customer base, the use of analog cameras in law enforcement declined. As a result, the film family was discontinued in 2003.

The Law Enforcement LE400 is specifically designed to provide superior sharpness and fine grain, as well as exceptional highlights and shadow detail. The film’s 2-step push process performance up to EI 1600 makes it a versatile choice for a variety of applications that include crime scene photography, traffic accident and property damage investigations, and mug shots.

One of the most important features of Kodak Law Enforcement LE400 film is its exceptional sharpness at 400 speed. This characteristic allows the film to capture fine detail with exceptional clarity, making it an ideal choice for capturing images in situations where accuracy and detail are critical.

In addition, the film’s wide exposure latitude ensures that rich, accurate colors are maintained even when underexposed or overexposed. This feature makes Kodak Law Enforcement LE400 film an excellent choice for capturing images under a wide range of lighting conditions, including those where the light source is difficult to control.

Developing the film

After exposure, developing the film stock is essential, especially for this particular type of film, for which the standard C-41 development process is used. Unlike black-and-white film, the development process for color film is standardized and offered by most photo labs. Once the process is complete, the developed film strips containing the captured photos are available.

Availability and Alternatives

The Kodak Law Enforcement LE400 was only available in 35mm format and was offered in packages of 20 rolls. It was only available in 12 and 24 frame lengths. Since the police or forensics were usually in urgent need of the footage, it was not possible to wait for the 36 frame film or waste unnecessary film stock. Hence only the relative short lengths.

The film cartridge has a 3/4-inch square note area that provides more space for notes about the subject or exposure and processing conditions. For easier identification, the film cartridges are translucent (“frosted”). In addition, a plastic bag is included in each pack of 20 rolls to ensure easy transportation.

Meanwhile, the Kodak Law Enforcement LE400 is no longer in production. An available alternative in 35mm format is the Kodak Ultramax 400*.
