The Kodak Ektachrome 50 HC is a slide film. It was presented by Kodak in the USA in the 90s. At first it was only to be sold on the markets in Europe and Japan.

One reason for the development of the film was to position it as an alternative to Kodakchrome with similar sensitivity but with the possibility to develop it faster. The E6 development process was much more widespread at that time.

The Kodak Ektachrome 50 HC is a reversal film for colour slides. The sensitivity is indicated with ISO 50. If you still get your hands on it today, you can usually expose it. Possibly, depending on the storage, it might have lost some sensitivity. Important pictures should not be captured on this film without having tested it first.

Development of the film

The film material is developed in the E6 process The developing process was developed for slide film and is standardized. They can then be viewed with a slide projector or directly.

Availability and alternatives

The Ektachrome 50 HC could only be purchased for 35 mm cameras. One roll of film was enough for 36 frames. The cartridge containing the film was DX-tagged.

Fresh material is no longer available. The production was stopped. A successor, which is still being produced today, doesn’t exist as such directly.

Use of old film material

If you still find a roll of Ektachrome 50 HC today, this has usually already passed its expiration date. An important point regarding the quality of later images is the conditions under which the unexposed film material is stored. If the film has been stored correctly, it should be possible to obtain acceptable results even if the expiration date has passed. However, it is important to note that the quality of the film will gradually deteriorate over time and it may no longer be suitable for all applications.
