Fujifilm Instax Wide Monochrome

The Fujifilm Instax Wide Monochrome is an instant film. The film is manufactured by Fujifilm in Japan. It is the counterpart to color film for the wide instant film format.

The Monochrome delivers images with a size of 10.8 by 8.6 cm. This size is roughly equivalent to two Instax Mini images or two credit cards placed side by side. The actual picture taken takes up 9.9 by 6.2 cm and is surrounded by a white frame. This frame can be written on with a felt-tip pen, making the film perfect for weddings or birthdays.

If one puts the film into a suitable instant camera, the first thing to be ejected is the Darkslide, a plastic cover. This piece protects the pictures from light before it is inserted. Once this step is done, the camera is ready for use and the first pictures can be taken.

After the film has been ejected from the camera, the captured image can be seen within a few minutes. There is no need to shake the film. It is also not sensitive to light after it has been exposed, before that of course. Therefore you should never open the camera if there is still film in it.

Film format

A suitable instant camera for this film can be one of Fujifilm’s Instax Wide series of cameras, including the Instax Wide 300 and the Instax Wide 100. It can also be used with Lomography’s Instax Wide film format instant cameras, the Lomo’Instant Wide. In the old Polaroid cameras it cannot be exposed.

There are ten unexposed instant images in a film cassette. The unexposed film should be stored dark and dry. It is better not to freeze the film material.

For the Instax Mini film format there is also a black and white film available. A film for black and white images is not yet available for cameras of the Instax Square format, as of July 2019.
