Instax Wide

An overview of the films for the Instax Wide Format from Fujifilm.

The Instax Wide Format is the second Instax format from Fujifilm. The first film was introduced together with the first camera in the late 1990s by the Japanese company Fujifilm.

An image has a size of 8.6 cm by 10.8 cm. The actual image takes up an area of 6.2 by 9.9 cm. The rest is filled by a white frame. This size is equivalent to two Instax Mini pictures.

The dimensions are well suited for wide motifs. Thus, the film is a very good choice for architectural or landscape images. The film is also well suited for photographing larger groups. Shooting in portrait format is also possible, of course. Here, however, is on one side, then the wider frame, this should be considered in advance.

The unexposed film material should be stored dry and cool. The individual images are in a film cassette. This is later inserted into the camera. There are ten images in a film cassette.

Like all film material, Instax Wide films are sensitive to light. When you take the film cassette out of the packaging, the film material is protected by a film on top. After placing the film in the camera, this film is removed from the camera. Then the back must not be opened, otherwise the film becomes unusable.

The development time after taking the picture is a few minutes. Then you can directly see your captured image. Further steps are not necessary. So the image should not be shaken either. This has no positive influence, rather perhaps a negative one.

Unlike other film formats, Fujifilm is the only manufacturer of films. In principle, there are only two films to choose from. The Instax Wide Film* for color photos and the Instax Wide Monochrome* for black and white film images. The black and white film was introduced many years later in the 2010s. The other films are just editions of the color film with a differently designed frame around the images.

The Instax Wide films can of course be used in all Fujifilm instant cameras for this format. They are also necessary for the Lomo’Instant Wide. However, it is not possible to use them in the old Polaroid cameras.
