The Olympus Trip AF 30 is a compact camera that was introduced in the 1990s. It is characterised by its user-friendliness and is therefore well suited for beginners. A similar model is the Olympus Trip AF 31, which also offers a self-timer.
The camera is equipped with a fixed 34 mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/5.6. With this focal length, it is well suited for snapshots. Of course, it is not possible to focus on distant subjects.
Focussing is automatic and there are no manual setting options. The aperture and shutter speed are set by the camera itself, while the sensitivity of the film is recognised by the coding on the film roll.
There is a built-in flash that triggers automatically. It can also be deactivated. The flash has a built-in fill-flash mode. This mode can be switched on at will and guarantees that the flash fires with every shot.
A fill flash is useful when the subject receives less light than the background. One option would be someone standing in a room and photographed in front of a window.
The Olympus Trip AF 30 can be mounted on a tripod. The camera requires two AA batteries for operation.
Films for the Olympus Trip AF 30
The camera can still be used and there is still a selection of films for it. In addition to the batteries, films are also required.
According to the instruction manual, the Olympus Trip AF 30 is designed for use with 35mm films offered by various manufacturers.
A good choice for colour photography is Kodak Portra 400*. If you want to stay monochrome, the Ilford FP4 Plus* is not bad. There are also a variety of other 35mm films for this camera.
The colour film is developed using the C-41 process, which is offered by many professional photo labs. Some of these laboratories also offer the development of black and white film.
The negatives of this camera have a size of 24 mm x 36 mm and about 36 pictures fit on a roll. A small window on the back shows the film loaded.
The automatic film advance function automatically advances the film to the next frame after each release. When the film roll is full, the camera automatically rewinds the film before the back can be opened. There is also a manual rewind process via a switch on the top of the camera, which also includes a counter for the photos taken.
