The Nikon Zoom 400 is a snapshot camera. It was presented to the public by the Japanese company in 1998. The model was also offered in parts of the world as Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 80.

The 35mm camera comes with a fixed zoom with variable focal length. 38 mm to 80 mm is the zoom range of the lens. The maximum aperture is f/5 or f/9.6. The 35mm camera has an autofocus. The closest focusing distance of this lens is 70 cm.

The Nikon Zoom 400 has a light meter. It is designed for an ISO range from 100 to 800. The 35mm photo camera reads the DX code of the film cartridge and adjusts the light meter accordingly. If this code is missing on the cartridge, ISO 100 is selected as standard. Exposure is automatically set by the camera.

The compact camera comes with a built-in flash. The power ranges up to 9 meters at ISO 100. Between exposures the camera needs about six seconds to recharge the flash.

The 35mm camera has a built-in self-timer and a thread for a tripod. At a size of 11.8 x 6.4 x 4.2 cm, the Nikon Zoom 400 weighs 210 grams according to the operating instructions. A CR 123A battery (eBay / Amazon*) is responsible for the power supply. When using the flash for half the pictures, one battery is sufficient for 13 rolls of film.

Films for the Nikon Zoom 400

Which films does the Nikon Zoom 400 need? It needs 35mm films. The films in the 35mm photo camera are automatically rewound to the next frame.

35mm films are still produced today and are quite easy to get. Possible films for the Nikon Zoom 400 are the Kodak Ultramax 400* for color images and the Kodak T-Max 400* for black and white images.

The colour film is processed in the C-41 process. The C-41 process is offered by almost every photo lab. The black and white film is developed in a suitable developer.

Nikon Zoom 400 QD

As with many compact cameras from Nikon, a Quartz Date variant was also offered for this model. This offers the possibility of imprinting the date and time at the time the picture was taken. There is the possibility of setting a leap year up to the year 2019 and an additional battery is not needed for the model that weighs 5 grams more.

An additional feature of the Zoom 400 QD is the Panorama mode. In this mode, the image is partially cropped to create a panoramic look. The exposed area on the negative is then 13 x 36 mm. The model was also offered as Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 80 QD.
